March 23, 200422 yr Here is a shot of the ocean at 32,000 feet. I was using FS2004 downloaded weather. What is the "square" area below me? Is this the cloud deck? Is this normal? Why doesn't the cloud deck extend to the horizon?Thanks!Airbushttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/68272.jpg Al Kaupa Digital Storm purchased 8/17/2011; Win7x64: Asus P8P67 Deluxe; Intel i7 2600K@3,9 GHZ; nVidia GTX 560Ti; 8GB DDR3 1600 Corsair Dominator; Power Corsair HX 750W; Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD; 300GB WD VelociRaptor; 1TB Seagate.
March 23, 200422 yr It's the top of the visibility layer. Visibility at sea level is, say, 30 miles, but visibility at 32,000 is effectively unlimited. In FS2000 and earlier, once you came above the layer at which the visibility changed from 30 miles to unlimited, all of a sudden you could see the ground all the way to the horizon in all directions. To overcome that bug MS added what amounts to a thin layer of cloud on top of the viibility layer. Unfortunately, under some circumstances, it shows up as a big white square, just as you show it.I've heard that it is most obvious with some external weather programs, but I'm not sure which ones.Richard
March 23, 200422 yr I had that just a few weeks ago.Let me ask you... have you ever downloaded any modified cloud files? If you have, you may want to reload them again, I did with Chris's cloud types and have not had the problem since.I have no idea what caused it, the my fix did work. March 23, 200422 yr Mike,I am still using the original default clouds in FS2004, but I am going to try Chris's cloud types and see if this goes away. It appears that this may only occur with downloaded weather, but still have to check that out. Thanks!Airbus Al Kaupa Digital Storm purchased 8/17/2011; Win7x64: Asus P8P67 Deluxe; Intel i7 2600K@3,9 GHZ; nVidia GTX 560Ti; 8GB DDR3 1600 Corsair Dominator; Power Corsair HX 750W; Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD; 300GB WD VelociRaptor; 1TB Seagate.
March 23, 200422 yr Are you positive that you didn't download a cloud texture? Because the normal cirrus layer texture should fade into the distance. -Daniel
March 23, 200422 yr Author Commercial Member Hi, you probably download JohnCi "overcast simulating" which can only be used with custom setting weather etc.. The problems is your cirrus clouds, reinstall ALL 16 default cirrus files.ThanksChris Willis[link:fsw.simflight.com/FSWMenuFsSim.html]Clouds And Addons For MsFs Kind RegardsChris Willis
March 23, 200422 yr Author Commercial Member Hi, If still happend with default clouds, If you download the highest performance v2 from here http://fsw.simflight.com/FSWFs2k4fix.html and you want only to fix this blocky and want the default fs2004 cumulus, only install the cirrus files from the 32 bits folders, ignore all others files.ThanksChris Willis[link:fsw.simflight.com/FSWMenuFsSim.html]Clouds And Addons For MsFs Kind RegardsChris Willis
March 24, 200422 yr Chris,You are right, I did install those new overcast textures! I replaced those with my backups and it looks like the white block went away, however, there is still a slightly darker "square" below my plane which I assume is normal. Here is what it looks like now:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/68404.jpgThanks for your help. I intend to try some of your other cloud textures to see how my performance is affected.Airbus Al Kaupa Digital Storm purchased 8/17/2011; Win7x64: Asus P8P67 Deluxe; Intel i7 2600K@3,9 GHZ; nVidia GTX 560Ti; 8GB DDR3 1600 Corsair Dominator; Power Corsair HX 750W; Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD; 300GB WD VelociRaptor; 1TB Seagate.
March 24, 200422 yr I came out with a post right after I released the overcast texture set warning simmers of this issue. I am sorry to say Microsoft uses the cirrus layer I used to simulate vis layers from above. I'm happy to hear you followed my original instructions and made a backup. The overcast texture set should really only be used as a last resort for the most diehard of instrument fliers. I've never found any other way to simulate a true overcast layer in FS2004. -John
