March 17, 201214 yr I am moving from one computer to a new build computer. Can I uninstall FSX with out first uninstalling GEX, UT2, UTX, REX,etal.? I know that I can have the programs on only 1 computer at a time, but I do not want to uninstall the addons until I have installed FSX onto the new computer. I also know that once I uninstall FSX from the original computer I will have to uninstall each addon prior to installing on the new build. I am just extremely anxious over this whole process and I want to do one thing at a time. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks,Lynn Lynn Fisher
March 17, 201214 yr Most add-on programs will not work properly (or at all) if you remove FSX and reinstall it no matter what. This is because of the add-on components that must be located within the (drive):FSX folder structure. Removing the add-ons really doesn't matter anyway IMHO. While there is much hoopla about uninstalling programs in some order and all that, it has been my experience that with a good registry cleaner it doesn't matter. This especially doesn't matter if you plan to reinstall your add-ons anyway. The exception to this is a program that is entirely independent of FSX, such as Plan-G or vLSO which run by themselves and only have hooks to FSX via other means such as FSUIPC or SimConnect. These you don't need to uninstall. What I do is this: I uninstall FSX then I delete the folders of the add-ons (this is optional unless I am planning to rename the folders or put them on a different hard drive location). I then run the registry cleaner and it removes the entries that are obsolete. Or, if you don't have a registry cleaner, you can uninstall each add-on before uninstalling FSX itself (since some of the missing files can/will cause uninstall errors and you may not get a clean uninstall). When I reinstall the addons, the installation process fixes the entries in the registry if they exist, and places the components in the correct folders within my FSX structure. That being said, sometimes I can minimize some start-up and configuration issues by looking in the folders for files called *.ini or *.cfg and copying them off to a safe location before deleting/unistalling. Then I check each of these files and change any path entries if applicable to the new path my custom settings are as they were before the changes. As always, YMMV.EDIT: After re-reading your post, it sounds like it's the legality thing you are worried about. Personally, I don't worry about it as I know that once I have the installation as I want it on the new drive/computer, I will uninstall the original. I am not worried that the police are going to take me away over it even if it takes a week to get it done. Just don't run both programs at once and you'll be fine. You should be able to run FSX on your new PC and register it again, as long as you abide by the copyright rules overall and not keep the original setup.
March 17, 201214 yr If you have any FSDT products, read their FS Dream Team Installation Guide, page 8, where you should unregister the product then move the registration over to the new computer. This will allow you to move the product to another computer without having to pay for it again. Other than that, you should be okay to reinstall addons to another computer. For instance, last year I upgraded this computer, reinstalled FSX/Acceleration, then reinstalled each addon. I had no problems as long as you have the original registration key (I have a FS Software directory in my e-mail program where I store all addon e-mails for products I own). The FSDT uninstall program is really slick and easy.Best regards,Jim

March 19, 201214 yr Author Thank you all for your information. That eases my mind. Particularly the FS Dream Team. I have a number of their programs and I certainly would not want to repurchase them. I am not looking forward to this from a reinstall (expect weeks to get it all installed again), but I sure do look forward to my new dedicated I7-2700, SSD OS, and SSD FSX drive computer. Thanks,Lynn Lynn Fisher
