March 31, 201214 yr Back when I was takeing flight instruction for my PLL in a C-150. I was told that if the rudder controls failed you could control yaw by opening the doors in flight, it works. Also by working the power setting you could land but you would be really busy on approach. Now it looks like you can only one door in the Maule so you would always yaw left, that wold make it interesting. Ok, off track, back to the "R" key. You can leave the aircraft in flight and control it in R/C mode. you can retern to the cockpit view anytime just by changing your view. Just found it ineresting and fun.Guess I should have read it over first, hate when that happens.
March 31, 201214 yr Yeah, "R" key sure does provide you with some creative options for recording videos. I made a few yesterday. And every time you press "R" again, camera positions itself close to the aircraft. Fun stuff :)Cheers
March 31, 201214 yr Author Another fun thing to do. Just be flying along and hit the "B" key for a total electracal failer, no flaps, nothing electracal. Asume best glide speed and start looking for a place to put down, keep a sharp eye on your air speed all the way down. Can you make it? no one else there to help you. You are on your own.
March 31, 201214 yr Author Edit: That of course should be the "B" key, Da. Just discovered Edit post, learn something every day!
March 31, 201214 yr You can remap commands to open all the doors, but I haven't been able to get just the right front door to open individually. It seems to be only either the left door, or ALL the doors including the cargo door.On a related note, Penn & Teller did a thing on Discovery about using the doors in place of the rudders for landing in their first episode of "Penn & Teller Tell a Lie," resulting in some pretty cool footage of this at work in the real world!
March 31, 201214 yr Author That is really great, thanks. My instructor and I would practice that, but not all the way down. I don't think they did either. Great fun. It has also been done with multi engine jets using engine thrust to control yaw, not so much fun to say the least, but it did save many lives.
March 31, 201214 yr It's not shown in the video, but they did successfully land with that. They're pro stunt pilots though, and it is the Discovery channel, so I'm sure they practiced many times and could have used the rudder at any time if they needed it.
March 31, 201214 yr Commercial Member I always questioned if you could open a door like that in the slipstream. They were able to crack it a few inches, but I doubt any man could open it up all the way, or push up the Icon's canopy. Kevin Miller 3D Artist and developer
April 1, 201214 yr Author You would not have to open the door very far to cause the aircraft to yaw. You are right a person could never open the door 90 degress.
