CJR-200 Autopilot ILS Problems?

Featured Replies

Have you heard of or experienced any issues with the CJR-200 autopilot functionality? I'm throwing this out there to find out if it's just me or if there are issues with some 3rd party planes.

A few issues I've had with the CRJ-200

  1. Feels extremely under powered, particularly on departure. Takes all of an 8,200ft. rwy. This could be pilot error in choosing too short of a runway but I find it hard to believe this small 50 seater struggles so much to reach lift off speed (around 200kts if I remember right)
  2. Autopilot struggles to maintain localizer on ILS approach; seems to overcorrect back and forth, result is it places me wide right of the runway. Not sure if this is an autopilot problem or wind sheer.
  3. Autopilot doesn't capture/maintain glide slope on ILS approach. Seems to be all on me to manually handle glide slope.

Thank you in advance and feel free to call me an idiot as long as you point out what I'm doing wrong :Nerd:

1) i can easily depart a 4000ft rwy in the CRJ. Suspect overweight for the conditions and lack of takeoff trim. Higher elevations will require longer t/o rolls so adjustments to weight might be needed

2) could be airspeed related, wind related.

3) FSX will only capture the GS if you fly through from below AND are at a normal approach speed. If you descend through it or are too fast, it will not capture.

As to being an idiot - well, you were smart enough to ask here for help - so there's still hope! :)

Thank you Vic. I'll check on weight. I normally don't have a problem setting out on a flight with the default weight FSX assigns. The other CRJs achieve lift pretty quickly in comparison. I'll do some searching on ILS approach speed for the CRJ and make more attempts. Maybe that is the issue.

For autopilot with default FSX, don't try getting on the loc or GS for that matter if you're over 180 kts... In real life we vector CRJ's onto final who are doing around 160-200 over the ground that is....

I was almost 7k lbs. too heavy. Once I reduced fuel, I was able to take off easier.

On ILS GS capture, the suggestion of airspeed nailed it. I got my approach speed down to 140-160 kts & autopilot brought me in to minimums beautifully albeit further beyond the beginning of the runway then I expected. ILS approach was KRST RWY 13.

Thanks everyone.
