Help please - Stearman Aerobatics fuel problem

Featured Replies

Hi - hope I'm posting this in the right forum.

Point One: I'm a complete newb to flight sims (please, forgive me!), and I've got a problem with the Stearman Aerobatics mission.

Point Two: I'm on the tarmac with no fuel, becuase I ran out of fuel trying to complete the mission! There's no fuel available at this airport. Even if I fuel the Stearman up in the hangar I still have no fuel when I start the mission - it won't start up, either by hitting 'B' or 'Q' for the checklist. I can't bring up the map to take me to a different airport with fuel - 'M' doesn't work.

I'm playing this on Steam (if that's relevant - what do I know?! See Point One LOL).

Am I:

A) Screwed.

B ) Royally Screwed

C) You dumb newb, all you have to do is ...

Please tell me it's C. Feel free to tell me how dumb I am. If it's A or B feel free to tell me how dumb MS is for designing a game which lets newbs like me get in jams like this.

[obligatory "what's with your weird username" explanation: I do recreational sport fishing from a kayak; my kayak is called a Hobie Outback; here in Australia we call kayaks 'yaks' for short: outbackyak, OK?]

hey Yak,

afaik you cannot refuel in mission at an airstrip that has no fuel. I expect someone - Jeroen for instance, will know which strips do and don't have fuel..If you land at a field that does you just hit F and up comes the filler screen (I think - never done it!) In Free flight you just return to the hangar and re-fuel but not so in missions (and you can't use the M key in a mission, either!)

So, to answer your question: A or B - you decide

:)

Have you tried fueling up the plane you want to use, then fly it for a second, before going to the map and selecting the mission?

No, I haven't, but I just tried it - didn't make any difference. Still have zero fuel.

So it seems like it's A or B. Which doesn't surprise me with MS. Unless someone else has a suggestion?

I suppose I could always uninstall it and start again but at Level 15 that seems like - how can I put this? - unacceptable. If I can't complete this mission all the other missions that flow from it aren't available to me, but going back to Day One seems like overkill.

<insert 'MS sucks' rant here/>

Make sure you fuel up the same paint scheme in the mission as Flight tracks the fuel in each paint scheme.

I didn't know that (useful info - thanks!), but the paint scheme for the mission ('big red') isn't available to me until I complete the mission. So I can't fuel it up as I haven't completed the mission. Right now the only paint schemes available to me are: 'US Navy'; 'Army Air Corps'; 'Recall' & 'Rides'.

I've a feeling this is a bug because:

1) outbackyak is granted access to 'Big Red' for the aerobatics mission;

2) 'Big Red' runs out of fuel in this mission and the aircraft fuel state is persistent unless changed;

3) Usually you can refuel aircraft if you have unlocked the paintscheme, however 'Big Red' is only unlocked after the aerobatics mission so outbackyak cannot refuel the aircraft himself.

I will try to reproduce this however I already have the paintscheme unlocked. Will report back in a bit.

Edit:

I can confirm that if I remove the fuel for 'Big Red' it is not automatically topped up to full during the Stearman Aerobatics mission.

I'll report this in the beta forums and see if there's a workaround available.

Edit 2:

I can also confirm that this is present in missions where:

a) The player flies a locked paintscheme

b) The starting airfield has no provisions for adding fuel

Known affected missions:

1) Stearman Aerobatics

2) Kayaker Search and Rescue

Yak, I think you'll have to can this attempt; go back to the mission screen and fuel up before you take off..You can do most of the smaller missions with <20% fuel..As long as you don't land at small fields, I'm pretty sure you can gas up, as I've gassed up carrying passengers before, but it was at Hilo..

outbackyak, please do not uninstall Flight for now, there is a bug with progress syncing between Flight and Microsoft's servers so if you uninstall you might lose your progress. I am looking for a workaround as we speak.

outbackyak,

Could you try doing the mission with the yellow Stearman? A Flight developer has suggested to see if this helps.

You can't do that mission in another plane, but the first thing I'd do is to select another bipane in free flight, fuel it up, then try the mission. I think I recall that the red biplane uses whatever fuel you had in your last biplane.

If THAT doesn't work, make sure you have a fueled biplane in free flight, then exit the game and reload, then try the mission.

OK - by sheer chance I've found a workaround that allowed me to refuel and complete the mission, so I figured I should post here in case anyone else has the same issue. I hope it works for you too.

1) I tried to restart the Stearman Aerobatics mission - and I still had no fuel (I had hoped that maybe Microsoft might have patched it, but they hadn't).

2) I quit the mission and then immediately went to do an Aerocache hunt, which happened to be at Hilo which has fuel. (This was the Aerocache of the Day, Waiakea Pond, and the Aerocache was right next to the airport - I think it's possibly important that the Aerocache is nearby, or else the next bit might might not work; you might be too far away from the airport to be able to do the glide landing)

3) When I started the Aerocache hunt I found myself above Hilo in the Stearman with the Big Red paint scheme, and still with no fuel and the engine stopped.

4) I managed to do a glide landing at Hilo and I was then able to fuel the Stearman up.

5) I completed the Aerocache hunt and then landed at Hilo again (I don't know if this last bit is important or not, or whether I could have just quit the hunt after point 4, but I figure I should tell you exactly what I did).

6) I restarted the Stearman Aerobatics mission, I was fully fueled up and I was able to complete the mission.

So, it looks like if anybody else has the same problem they should be able to fix it the same way as I did - do an Aerocache hunt that is nearby an airport that has fuel, immediately after trying the Stearman Aerobatics mission. There are several hunts that ought to work.

I hope this helps anyone else who has the same problem I did.

Very cool to hear that you were able to find a solution. The aerobatics mission is a lot of fun.

Thanks for posting your solution just in case anyone else runs into it.
