FSX problems - help me troubleshoot please

Featured Replies

Interesting thread indeed for someone like me, new to FSX and with a new PC (I7 3770k oc 4.4GH, 8 G RAM, 10'000 rpm HDD, NVidia GTX680). I had loads of issues to resolve in one week, and the graphic part is 99% of them.

My major problem is (after disappearing for a few days - I really thought I finally got rid of it thanks to Jim) that each time I go to an FSX menu or windowed FSX to reach another programme, my FSX screen would not be recoverable and will be corrupted in some way.

I tried the UIAutomationcore.dll, with and without userpool, for a few days, I could make a couple of flights with no issues. But today was the worst experience...

When in EGLL (Aerosoft scenery) and PMDG 737NGX first flight my AI traffic was there, the screen got corrupted after take-off when I went to flight planning.

On my second flight from EGLL (after restarting FSX) my AI traffic was gone...?! I tried to rectify this and closed FSX.

On a third attempt, no AI again in spite of a full reinstall of the scenery, once in flight my ATC screen went empty and I could not communicate anymore, trying to reestablish it through the FP menu costed me another black screen.

When I want to see the kneeboard it appears only on the desktop, not in full screen mode! It did work correctly initially.

I played with all tweaks from Bojote to Word Not Allowed (not mixing them, one after the other) and Ryan (PMDG) to no avail so far. All I know is that when my sim does work, it is extremely smooth, no stuttering at all and decent Frame Rate (22 in EGLL with 65% AI). I have the latest driver 301.42

Has anyone got an idea where I should start? (After twenty years of FS, a tad frustrating and humbling I must say!). By the way, the NVidia Inspector 1.9.6.5 has some different language than earlier versions making it difficult to understand some of the suggested tweaks of this thread (VSync for example has no 1/2 option what should I select?).

Thanks for any feedback.

Does it happen in other games or 3D apps JC?

Have you tried with HIGHMEMFIX=1?

  • Author

Dario, my PC is used exclusively for FSX. And yes Manta I have the HIGHMEMFIX=1 in my cfg file.

I reinstated all Word Not Allowed's recommendations as well.

Then it might just be a defect card. What was your previouis card used? Try it. Also are you sure that the HIGHMEMFIX=1 is under the [GRAPHICS] tab and not just in a random place?

Btw, how is the smoothness with Word Not Allowed's tweak? Did you manage to eliminate all stutters and get a 100% smooth FSX experience?

I'd try returning the card. But FSX, it's such a bad coded program, it's got so many bugs and problems, and is causing us a lot of headaches. To be honest with you I spent 50% of my FSX time solving problems, and once problem 1 got solved, right after it I got another. Stupid FSX.

Then try something else like heaven's benchmark, just to troubleshoot. It's an elimination process man

Jean Claude, I saw your question here, but wasn't really sure how else I would help you.

As Dario said, you need to troubleshoot and eliminate problems. There are many test programs, starting with OCCT, Prime95, Linx, Memtest, FurMark, 3DMark, Heaven... only to start with the few. If ANY of those tests crashes, you most likely have a hardware problem.

When I have such problems, and if I would have such problems I would: format, reinstall everything from scratch, check for fully up to date drivers and start from there. And on the clean machine do some hardcore testing. My machine, after I buy one, undergoes about 1-2 months of various really hardcore tests.

Thanks Word Not Allowed. As I am totally unable to analyse this problem any further (I am a -RW- pilot but definitely not competent in IT), I shall return the PC to the shop on Monday morning.

After running an incredible number of tests, I am still getting the same problems over and over again regardless of my cfg, settings, oc, etc... The 3D test gave my system the thumb up and the highest marking of the bunchmark but that is of little interest to me when I can't make a single flight from A to B without getting a corrupted screen, disappearing panels or plane or eventually black screen...

Thanks anyway, just terribly frustrated by FSX and realise that you either accept mediocrity or spend most of your time tweaking, never had anything like that with FS9 and my previous rig, wondering today why I changed!

JC,

Have you tried the following.

- Checked the temp of your video card to make sure its not overheating

- Tried running without your system being oveclocked. Return to the stock mobo setting with no OC and while fps will be worse, see if its stable.

- On the AI problem, some of Aerosofts airports require that the a/c casts shadows be turned off otherwise they might not show up.

- With the system not being overclocked, delete your .cfg and try with an unmodified stock .cfg.

- Like someone else said, make sure highmemfix is in the right category.

- Do a fresh video card driver install using driver cleaner as well even thought it says it might not be needed after removing the drivers to make sure there is nothing remainimg from the last driver set.

- Post your .cfg here so we can see if there is anything unusual in it.

Jean-Claude, I understand your pain. I actually have similar customers very often in my shop, but the deal is, over the phone or text, it's impossible to troubleshoot someone's machine. You need to have it in front of you - someone who is knowledgeable enough should be able to find out what's wrong quite fast enough. And for you, less aggrevation.
