Migrating OS+FSX to SSD

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I just bought a Samsung SSD. I need a bit of advice on how to install/migrating my OS to the new SSD while my FSX + add ons currently installed on a separate dedicated drive.

  1. Will I be able to start FSX by just install the OS and migrate the registry to the OS(windows 7 64bit)?
  2. Do I need to re install all the add ons?

Regards

Tony.

A lot of "if"s here. If you are going to take an image of your existing OS drive and restore it to the SSD, you should be able to get away with not having to reinstall FSX and Adons. HOWEVER, just restoring the image to te SSD would not make the best use of the SSD. You are better off doing a fresh OS install . You might get away with using a registry editor to "fake" the FSX install but you would still have to reinstall the addons.

Save yourself a BIG headache, bite the bullet and do a completely fresh OS install followed by a fresh FSX install. You will probably wind up doing it anyway.

Oh lord....might sell my SSD instead. Can't be arsed to go through 4days of add ons installation + defragmentation again. Thanks you anyway.

p.s. Unless someone can come up with a solution here to save the day. :)

Not really Anthony, I'm with Vic, your best bet is a complete reinstall... and never ever defrag an SSD!

Hello Dass, what I meant in my op is that I got a new 128gb SSD, I would like to do a fresh install of Windows 7 and keep my fsx + add ons on the separate HDD. :)

Ah, ok. Sorry, missed that

never ever defrag an SSD!

Why not? I do mine everyday? I thought it was good to defrag to keep the transfer speeds to a maximum. :LMAO: :LMAO: JK ROFL

I see a lot of experience FSX users prefer OS on a normal HDD and fsx on SSD, is there a special reason for that? How about fresh installation of Win7 on the Samsung SSD, and then buy a 256 gb SSD for FSX. To save the hassle of defragging headache.(normaly 6-7hours with OO defrag each time, not mentioning repeating process)

When I built my current FSX machine I decided to go the SSD route. I decided to have FSX on it's own dedicated SSD and the OS on a separate smaller SSD. Having the OS on the SSD has the greatest impact on performance. The machine starts up and shuts down extremely fast. I like that a lot. My FSX was installed on a Corsair 256GB SSD which served me well for three years but I was running out of room so last week I upgraded my FSX SSD to a Samsung 830 512GB SSD. You probably already know that having FSX on an SSD will NOT improve the performance (FPS) of FSX. What you will get is noticibly faster FSX load times. But for me the number one benefit is NO DEFRAGING. I hated the ordeal of defragging and never want to go back to that.

I did not have to copy my system disk but I used the included copy of Ghost15 to copy by FSX installation to my new SSD and has worked fine. I did have to re-register ASE but everything else seems to work fine.

Ahhh.....so it is ok to install OS on SSD and FSX on separate SSD. Do I still have to use NickN's OS installation guide for SSD? Minus the OO defrag ofc.
