Editing files

Featured Replies

Hi

Quite some time ago I've asked in this very forum how to edit the radio frequencies at a specific airport permanently. I was told to backup the file f4.csv and then to make my changes usingf a specific format.

Well, after reinstalling RC i tried to do it again, after rebuilding the database, and RC gives me the following error:

Run-time error '62'

RadarContact.rcv4module.get_arrival_information

and then it crashes.

It happens only when i select a flightplan including that particular airport.

i have FSUIPC version 4.70 and Makerwys 4.60. I use FSX

What can I do?

You have a format layout error on the specific line for that airport of f4.csv. That file is best edited with notepad and you must insure no extra white space characters were added or deleted, or other error. Note that trailing zeroes are not used in the decimal fields and after the decimal in will be one or two numbers followed by a comma as:

135.35,133.2,

with no space after the comma. There is no comma at the line end. If you place your cursor after the last number at the end of the line and hit the right arrow key it should immediately jump down to the before the first character on the next line. note also that some fields will have a "0," signifying an undefined frequency. The total number of fields in a line must be ten including the ICAO code field and the airport name field.

Compare it to the format of the line line above and below looking for a format difference. Was this an added airport or a modified version.

There is no difference in the data file formats used for FS9 and FSX. f4.csv is a fixed database file used for both versions. The data is not affected by a scenery rebuild. The only files in the rcv4 or rcv4x data files affected by a scenery rebuild are r4.csv and a4.csv and those are completely rebuilt.

Do you have your original copy of f4.csv?

  • Author

Yes, i have, as i've told you I always back up before editing.

This particular airport was not present in the vanilla installation of RC, and was added by rebuilding the database. There is no entry for this airport in the f4.csv.

I've tried entering blank frequencies, just as a proof of concept, as this:

VHHX,Kai Tak Intl,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0

But the error is still displayed.

This could mean i have to do some editing elsewhere too, but i'm totally clueless on that matter

f4.csv is sorted ascending by ICAO code. It should be between;

VHHH,Hong Kong Intl,128.2,129.9,122.55,118.7,0,0,120.6,124.05

VHHX,Kai Tak Intl,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

VIAG,Agra AB,0,0,0,122.3,0,0,122.3,0

See if that helps.

You can also insure it agrees with your flight plan ICAO code and has proper entries in r4.csv and a4.csv built from your scenery files.

can you restore from an earlier date, the file you edited?

I've always inserted the entry for VHHX betweeh VHHH and VIAG, no good news. r4.cvs and a4.cvs both have an entry for VHHX;

however i went through other files as well and i've noticed that m4.csv has no VHHX entry. maybe that's the problem?

can you restore from an earlier date, the file you edited?

what exactly do you mean, restoring f4.cvs to before my modifications?

i always back it up, so no worries about that

jd means to put back the original.

Now that we understand you added an airport it should have an entry in m4.csv.

VHHH,393,9000

393 is used to calculate the MSA as shown on the controller page. 9000 is the transition altitude as shown. Again it is a fixed database. Items modified in the controller page of RC are mostly not sticky between sessions.

Thanks for catching this adding airport item that I overlooked. See if this resolves the issue.

Nope, still the same error. it's getting frustrating...

I installed 9 dragon's Kai-Tak v2. The installation removes vhhh and installs vhhx. I modified f4.csv and m4.csv. to accommodate the frequencies in the afcad. For m4.csv I just changed the ICAO from vhhh to vhhx. In f4.csv I changed the ICAO from vhhh to vhhx and then inserted the frequencies:

Here's the f4.csv line:

VHHX,Hong Kong Intl,128.25,129.75,121.75,118.55,0,0,119.1,123.8

All changes in wordpad.

I am not getting any errors.

PM me your e-mail address and I can send f4 and m4 zipped to you so the formats are the intact.

I did have a problem with the auto-installer that took me a couple of scenery lib installs to recognize without file duplication the main file and landclass files.

The RC scenery rebuild worked fine.

I used FS9 to create the flight plan from Taipei but did not fly it. Here it is:

i tried using your exact comms line, but i still get the error. maybe the problem is not in those files but elsewhere.

Are you sure that this "get_arrival_info" error concerns f4.csv only?

f4, m4, r4, a4, or your plan does not match data. Files for f4 and m4 will be sent later.

You said it started with modifying f4 so I'm sending you later today the fixed files for f4 and m4 with 9dragons kai-tak that work for me. VHHH wil not be in those files as 9 dragons states that can cause a problem for both airports.

Thanks, however I don't use 9dragons's scenery, i own FlyTampa. I'll just look at the correct format in the entries

Whether you use FT or 9dragons would not affect f4.csv and m4.csv. The files were e-mailed to you a few minutes ago. See PM to get my address out of your spam list. If it doesn't get through I'll split them up into separate files. What is in question here is the integrity of f4.csv and m4.csv. Try mine which works to insure you can get RC working and you also might find the frequencies used sufficient. I also included the comms listing I used so you can see the layout of the fields. Only one frequency of each type can be used in RC.

To insure the correct data for the runways and airport location get into RC, in your FS folder open runway.txt, a huge file, in word and search for vhhx. Each add-on (not default) as a section pair of a deletion section followed by an addition section. The header of each section points to the path of the scenery used to extract the data. Whatever FT uses for folders should be the last vhhx entries in that log.

Not related to RC don't forget you'll need to modify your PMDG FMC data to add vhhx with the correct nav data and approaches. See if anybody offers the mod on the PMDG support forums here.
