July 3, 201213 yr I just read through a 58 page thread on overclocking my laptop and I'm tempted to try it. Based on the temps my cpu and gpu run at, I probably have more room to overclock my gpu. But I know historically FSX was more CPU bound. A lot of the performance boosts that were being reported in the thread I read were in games that tend to be mote gpu dependent (lots of shooters). Does anyone know if Flight will take advantage of more GPU better than FSX? Has anyone seen any improvement in Flight after overclocking?
July 3, 201213 yr It has been said that the Flight engine is able to go CPU or GPU-bound, it depends on your hardware configuration and your settings within the game.

Right now I have everything on HIGH except for shadows, which are on MEDIUM. Bumping shadows up to HIGH seems to drop my FPS near single digits. So, what I'd like to do, is see if I can get my shadows back up to HIGH. Any idea if OC'ing the GPU might help there, or do I just need to try it? (I think I know the answer to that one ;) ) My specs are in my sig below...
July 3, 201213 yr Why not try it? Then, if the gains are imperceptible, or virtually non-existent, just switch it back.
July 3, 201213 yr Author Why not try it? Then, if the gains are imperceptible, or virtually non-existent, just switch it back. I certainly can and that's probably just what I'll have to do. If, however, someone came back and said "No way! Won't help a bit!", then I'd at least know not to waste my precious time. *edit - but thank you all for wasting YOUR precious time reading my thread that I started to avoid wasting MY precious time.

LOL About OC'ing the GPU: afaik it has a lot less noticable effect then OC'ing a CPU, so I really doubt if OC'ing the GPU will enable you to set shadows from MED to HIGH... but I am also curious, so let us know how it goes.
July 4, 201213 yr Things like lights and shadows, light effects and reflections are as far as I know, more GPU-bound. As a comparison, I have an "old" MacPro 2x2.66Ghz from 2006 I think, all that with 6Go RAM. I had and ATI 4850 512Mo let's say till the big last update. Now I have a 5770 1Go. Before (4850) I had autogen to the max, shadows medium, textures were between high and max it depended on the temperature. Now with the 5770, I still can't rise the shadows system to hight or max, but the textures load quicker. The Autogen is just a little bit quicker too. I just did some personnal settings with the "Flight.cfg" file in order to lower the AA to 4x and lower water reflections. Now it's super fluid. If I push shadows to max on winter Alaska with the vSync, I have like 1-digit fps...
July 4, 201213 yr My GPU is O/C to 825Mhz..seems to make diddly-squat difference when I remove the O/C. My CPU, however, seems to make a big difference when talking about rendering shadows and dynamic lighting..seems to be more CPU bound, as said above.. Some things never change..... July 6, 201213 yr Author Well, here are some preliminary test results: Test flight is in the A5, winter, day, Low and Threatening, at low altitude just north of Tok Junction (lots of trees). FRAPS was running to get FPS. Stock clocking (CPU/GPU) 725/800 15 FPS OC1 840/890 18 FPS OC2 860/900 19 FPS, flight froze after a few minutes, but went back to the loading screen after about 10 seconds and then was OK again. I'm new at this whole over clocking thing, and, I won't lie - I got my "OC1" starting point from the internet (supposedly stable for my hardware). So I didn't really start from stock clock and then increase each one little by little. That's why I jumped to that first test point. But a 20% gain? Yeah, that sounds pretty good. When I have more time (maybe next week), I'll go back and see if I'm really at the highest stable point, and I'll get some temps too. Oh yeah - settings were all High except shadows on Medium and water reflections set to High in .cfg. Once I have my highest stable OC, I'll go back and see how it handles High shadows.
