July 5, 201213 yr Hi, I just tracked an A320 flying at 566 kt over the Pacific between New Caledonia and Australia. Is this a website error or is the traffic really flying at 566 kt? Cheers, Thanks, Kevin L

July 5, 201213 yr It could very easily be moving at that speed, although it might not be flying at that speed. Since it is not unknown to find 200 mph winds up at high altitude (i.e. big masses of air going at 200 miles per hour as they rush toward an area of low pressure, which is what wind is), if you happen to be flying in one of those air masses at 500 mph in the same direction as the air mass is moving, you'll be doing 700 mph over the ground, and you will show up on radar as doing 700 mph, even though your ASI is reading 500 mph.
