FSGenesis Mesh - Shows airport Inaccuracies

Featured Replies

I got the mesh for the midwest to west of the US (FSGenesis). The one thing I've noticed is that nearly every airport is either Higher then it should be or lower then it should be. It's on a plateo(sp) or it's in a hole. Now the next question would be how can this be fixed? Do I need to put a flatten.BGL at every airport or can I just put in the airports true altitude in AFCAD? Or can I D/L something to fix this? I really like the mesh (who doesn't). So I'm thinking also that I'm not the only one that has incountered this?Any Help would be appreciated. No doubt about it...Ronson2k

Check out the FAQ on the FS Genesis site. This is a side effect of mesh mixing with airports. Airports in fs2004 have to be perfectly flat, which of course they are not in real life. This causes the plateau problem. If there are bad ones, you can submit them as bugs, but otherwise that is just something you have to deal with when using mesh. Hopefully in the next version of flightsim...

You'll have to replace every single one of them with addon scenery optimised for that particular mesh (or using realworld elevation data which would mean they show wrong in the default mesh). This is a problem with neither the default mesh nor the default airports nor FSGenesis. The default mesh uses elevation data taken at greater intervals which means that in places it gives airport elevations that are off.FSGenesis mesh does the same but at a smaller interval meaning your airports which have been places to blend in with the default mesh (and thus given a vertical replacement in some cases) will not fit perfectly to that mesh.As airports in FS have to be completely level (who knows, this might change in the future) the entire airport will appear raised or lowered. It might also appear to jut out from the side of a mountain or hill or be embedded in a piece of land scooped out of the side of one (this was more apparent in Europe in FS2002 where every single airport was displaced horizontally due to some error in the data used to place them).

Hi,I just wanted to say something about my experience with using the FSGenesis mesh. I have the mesh installed for the entire Continental US. I have never seen a 'default' airport in a hole. Only some freeware scenery airports that I have downloaded and installed have ended up being in a hole. It's quite possible that I have just never happened upon a default airport that's in a hole. If you know of one I wouldn't mind checking it out if you could tell me the airport.Regards,Jim

Some of the small airfields behind Mount Rainier in Washington state come to mind. Not all that deep, but somewhat sunken.Personally I've not seen differences of more than a few meters myself either, just enough to graze the tops of the trees if you're approaching a bit low :)

You should see some of the airports in South America with the FS Genesis mesh.On one I have to fly over the threshold right after clearing a 50ft cliff.Nevertheless the FSG mesh is an excellent addon, good enough for me to have spent the money to get a Galaxy account.

Hey fellas, just a bit if clarification here. This is NOT a FSGenesis issue. It is a general issue with all enhanced mesh terrains. Every enhanced mesh available has the same problem with some airports and lakes being too high or too low for the improved terrain.Another sticky point is many of the MS airports are laterally displaced as well. Not too obvious until ya get into some serious terrain. The ya can wind up with an airport being 2000ft below the terrain. Definitely VTOL time.-------------------Racartronit means something, but I just can't remember what

I know, I have the Andes mesh.As you, I don't care. The occasional interesting approach is well worth the overall effect :-rotor

Howdy,"Another sticky point is many of the MS airports are laterally displaced as well"And not just the airfields! In some places, like the southern Andes and SE Alaska, the placement of coastlines, lakes, etc. is off by up to two kilometers, which makes the terrain almost unrecognizable once a high-res mesh is added. Fortunately, new utitlities for auto-generating accurate coastlines and lake positions are in development ;-)Cheers, Holger

Okay. Seems like not a simple fix. I was in no way critisising Justin's mesh. I would much rather fly with it then without it to be sure. I was currious as to a fix being out there is all. The complex nature of the airport systems probably lend themselves to being on flat terrain. No doubt about it...Ronson2k

I think there are only two ways to reduce the problem:1. Remesh the area surrounding the flatten, so that the transition to the correct altitude is more gradual.2. Hack the default flatten files, so the flattened area at the airport is smaller. This should reduce the problem.I live next to Wheeler AAF (PHHI). The default airport shows a taxiway on the SW side. In fact, this is an old WWII secret runway, constructed in the bottom of a gulch. As a result, with the FS Genesis Hawaii Mesh/LC, it causes problems. If one were to remove this entire portion of the stock airport, it should improve things quite a bit. Unfortunately, AFAIK, the only way to do this is to disassemble the default flatten file, edit it, and recompile it.scott s..
