Processor help

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I'm a newbie with getting processors. Right now I have a I7 Core Processor 920 2.66GHz 8 MB LGA 1366. What would be a good move up? I looked on amazon but they confuse me because some have more GHz but the price is lower, I always thought the more GHz the better it is. I know the best minds are in this forum so any feedback would be great!

Thanks for the response Ithendrix, Is there a way of keeping my motherboard and getting a good processor or is my motherboard too old?

Hi Travis the processor you have know uses 1366 socket so I believe the best upgrade chip you could get would be the 990x as that also uses 1366 socket. with sandy and ivy bridge going to 1155 socket.they wont work on your motherboard.

truthfully I know just enough about computers to be dangerous. I think I am correct but b4 you go out and buy a 990x a little more research may be in order, as far as cpu cooling and power supply and stuff I am sure that there are others on this forum waaayy more knowledgable than I. lets see what they may say.

Ps you could always try overclocking and I think the 920 is a pretty decent overclocking chip.

Ok that's what 1366 meant thanks, do you think I'll see an improvement if I went to a 990?

I appreciate that you are not a technical wunderkind but I would recommend you google "i7 920 overclocking". My 920 runs at 4 ghz and has since I got it. It takes a little work to get there, but you'll learn much and spend nothing and still get a sizable performance jump.

All the best,

That overclocking word has always made me nervous, I picture my computer in flames. Maybe your right though, I'll start reading up on it. You think it will make a difference?

Hi Ithendrix, I think i might go with that 990x you suggested. You don't think the fan that usally comes with the cpu will be enough?

Don't be afraid of overclocking! Do you have aftermarket air or watercooling? As long as you don't exceed 1.4 Volts and if your temps don't go to high then there's nothing to worry about, believe me. Don't be afraid of a BSOD when overclocking too, it simply means you CPU didn't have enough voltage and you need to increase it a little.

For an upgrade, imo absolutely not worth it going to a 990x. It will increase performance a bit, but it's such an expensive CPU!

I recommend selling your current CPU and motherboard on eBay and then upgrading to an Asus P8Z77-V as a motherbaord, and an i7 3770K as a new processor. If you don't have aftermarket cooling already I recommend getting something like a Corsair H50, or H100 if you can afford it and if it fits into your case.

You can overclock it to around 4.5 - 4.8 GHz and you'll see a massive improvement compared to your i7 920.

Hi, if you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for that?
