Help Me – I messed up a well run FSX install!

Featured Replies

My FSX install had been running smoothly with few errors and providing pretty good FPS – at least they made me happy.

I was having occasional problems with what I thought was enbseries. At times the sun would be intensely bright with a shimmering corona around it. At other times scenery was very dark even in bright no cloud daylight. When I used Shift+F12 to turn off enbseries the problems would stop.

I wanted to test FSX with no enbseries installed so I followed the instructions:

“Put this content in to MS FSX main directory.

Start Flight Sim. For disable effect, press SHIFT+F12 or remove this files from simulator directory.”

I deleted d3d9.dll and enbseries.ini from the FSX root.

I MADE NO OTHER CHANGES!!

My FSX system now suffers the following problems:

- crashes during startup - FSX uses 20 - 30 seconds of CPU time, reads a bunch of files then the address space disappears

- runs at 0.5 to 5.0 fps in areas where it was never less than 20 fps

- freezes after loading a flight – with a zoomed in view of the VC panel

- runs at 5 fps but constantly switches views and I can not stop it

I reinstalled the two enbseries files from the original download and the problems continued with no change in symptoms

I deleted fsx.cfg and let FSX rebuild the fsx.cfg – I was able to fly in FSX but at frame rates of less than ½ of normal and lots of freezes and crashes

Dxdiag says there is no problem with DirectX

Other video intensive games run with no problems

problems occur in FSX Full Screen and windowed

What have I done and how do I fix it?

8800GTS video with 301.42 driver the d3d9.dll date is 4/13/2009 and the .ini is 4/15/2009

After removing the enbseries files and again after reinstalling them - I did do a Vista restart

another couple symptoms / problems are:

the aircraft display on the Free Flight screen is corrupted - sometimes only a wire frame shows - sometimes just a wing or tail...etc

Frequently, but not always - the text in the FSX menu bar shows just - (hyphens) where there should be characters

When FSX does load and run - the scenery is distorted or blurry (not like blurries due to slow loading) as in very low texture settings even though I have all the settings to almost max - but some of the autogen is well defined. But - the aircraft and VC are detailed and crisp.

I've removed the two ENB files many times and never had anything happen like you have. I dont know what would cause that but have you tried deleting your shader folders (with FSX closed of course), then restarting FSX to see if it clears up the problem? I rebuild my shader files once in a while by deleting them and letting FSX build a new set. This link will explain how. Worth a shot as it wont mess anything up.

This makes little sense but did fix the problem.

Tried the suggestion about the shader-cache - made no difference

I have two test flights -

Elliot Bay (Seattle) over KBFI and KRNT - Beach Baron 58 2500' & 140 knots

Over Santee Lakes toward Miramar MCAS - Supercub at 1500' 90 knots

During the problem the first test was running at 8 - 9 fps and the 2nd at 11 - 12 fps

Reinstalled latest version of enbseries and a newer .ini - no change in the two test flight results

Used FTX Central to revert to the FSX default scenery (remove NA) - same fps in both tests

Used FTX Central to apply the NA region - SUCCESS!!

First test 18 - 19 fps

2nd test 20 - 21 fps

those are the same results I was getting prior to the initial removal of the d3d9.dll and enbseries.ini

This must have been a coincidence because ENB changes NOTHING to any FSX file... When you remove the two files from the FSX folder everything is as it was before. It's impossible for ENB to screw up an FSX install! So I guess something else must have happened without you knowing it (probably with Orbx). But I am glad you've got it solved anyway.
