August 8, 201213 yr This is the frustrating part of SSDs... So many different reviews... So overwhelming lol I still am kind of clueless lf what to get LOL Maybe an OCZ Vertex 4...? Can't go wrong with the Vertex 4, especially with the latest firmware. So fast...

August 8, 201213 yr Honestly, if I am going to have to install firmware updates and wipe my drive all the time then I have absolutely no reason to get one. I want a no hassle reliable solution... Firmware updates are non-destructive. It was just the first major beta that required a wipe, we're several no-wipe updates past that now. Have done a few on my own Vertex 4 with no issues.
August 8, 201213 yr Author Firmware updates are non-destructive. It was just the first major beta that required a wipe, we're several no-wipe updates past that now. Have done a few on my own Vertex 4 with no issues. Ahh okay... When I get one, I'll just update the firmware to the latest stable version then likely never touch it again lol. I have had my experiences with firmware updates and I have killed hardware doing it... 2 GTX580s to be exact ROFL :LMAO:
August 8, 201213 yr Don't know where you got that from... There's actually a French site that publishes return rates pulled from an unknown French store. They've recently put up their latest numbers - Crucial 0.82% (as against 0.8%) Intel 1.73% (as against 0.1%) Corsair 2.93% (as against 2.9%) OCZ 7.03% (as against 4.2%) Last time I saw the list Intel had top spot by a nice margin, so they've slipped quite a bit. But as you can see, this explains why you see so many more complaints about OCZ drives than any other brand. Sure, odds are if you buy one it isn't going to have problems, and note that the Vertex/Agility 4s aren't in these calculations, but why would you take the chance when brands like Intel, Crucial and Samsung are known to be very reliable? Cheers, Mike

August 9, 201213 yr Commercial Member Samsung 830s... /thread - Grammar *censored*, this was sent from my phone. Regards, Efrain RuizLiveDISPATCH @ http://www.livedispatch.org (CLOSED) ☹️
August 9, 201213 yr And I am right back to where I started! I think I should just stick with my trusty mechanical slow drive LOL I wouldn't let the outdated return results of a single retailer influence my buying decision, but I have the advantage of hindsight gained by experience. There aren't any widespread reports of problems with the current generation of OCZ SSDs, and those return figures do not account for the current generation.
August 11, 201213 yr Firmware updates are non-destructive. It depends of firmware version installed in bought OCZ Vertex 4 disk. According to anandtech.com review: "Upgrading to 1.4 firmware is destructive. (...) The 1.5 firmware upgrade is destructive if upgrading from 1.4 RC or older. However, if upgrading from final version of 1.4 firmware, the upgrade is not destructive." source: http://www.anandtech...4-review-128gb/ What is most important regardless producer, disk should be equiped with Marvell based controller. After firmware upgrade to rev. 1.4 or newer OCZ Vertex 4 is one of the best SSDs at consumer market segment. Others similar quality and performance are Crucial M4, Plextor M3 Pro, Samsung 830. And I am right back to where I started! I think I should just stick with my trusty mechanical slow drive Upgrading firmware in OCZ Vertex 4 shouldn't be a problem - as you are upgrading new, empty disk with older than 1.4 firmware, just after buying it. If you get disk with 1.4 or newer firmware, you won't have updating problem as changes in next firmware releases are (and should be) not as essential and not destructive.
August 11, 201213 yr Commercial Member Lets See: OCZ Agility 3 (1x180Gb, 1 x 240Gb) -- both in PC's Crucial M4 (admittedly transplanted into a Macbook) Samsung 810 (came inside this laptop) and whatever drive they put inside my Macbook Air. Micron (now Crucial) 1st Gen drives (one started to malfunction, after a couple of years of use) Apart from the last (irrelevant and outdated) entry, all of these drives have worked without hiccup. My advice is not to overthink it. If I were buying a drive tomorrow it would be a Crucial M4 or an OCZ Agility 4 (based on price, probably)
