August 5, 201213 yr Who decides whether it is the Captain or First Officer that lands the plane? Is each leg planned and assigned to a pilot before the flight during dispatch? Is it decided in the air and ultimately relies on whether the Captain is in a good mood? As far as I understand that FO and Captain both perform as many landings and takeoffs as eachother - i.e. a 50/50 split. August 5, 201213 yr Commercial Member Normally the Captain will fly one leg and the F/O fly's the other. The captain decides and it's planned in advance since you are either carrying out Pilot flying duties (PF) or Pilot not flying duties (PNF) That's the basics, a whole bunch of other factors may also apply, one of which is company crosswind limits, I can only speak for some airlines, if the crosswind goes over a certain limit (but obviously within the aircrafts limit) Then the F/O is not allowed to land the aircraft. August 5, 201213 yr We only have the 100 hours of experience limits on some airports but other than that we usually try to share the time equally. The captain usually decides on which leg to fly and most that I fly with like flying the first leg. Chris Miller
