are there any DC10's but not the Lite one(s)?

Featured Replies

It's noisy, jurassic and they're all scrapped and parted out (like all trijet types will be). But I feel like splashing money for fuel with the classic trijet. What options are available in the market?

DC10's but not the Lite one

I'm not one to mince words with paragraphs of explanations. NO. or I would have one

CLS probably makes one of the better but it certainly isnt great and is very light. Tom Ruth make a good freeware and of course it is lite. Sorry. kinda sad.

If you specifically want a DC-10 then this isn't the answer you are looking for, but if you want a great wide bodied trijet, then go for the MD-11, the last big trijet ever likely to be manufactured, and the PMDG version of that airliner is definitely NOT light!

I'd go with Bill's advice above. We'd probably all buy a good PMDG standard DC-10. But there isn't one. Their MD-11 for FS9 is a masterpiece though. I love it.

Over 10 years here and AVSIM is still my favourite FS site :-)

Yes I think you guys are right, been browsing like h*ll and the lite one is the only one available. They aren't poles apart right? I mean DC 10 and MD 11.

Thanks for the advice everyone. KLM has started to send one of its MD11s to be scrapped, and Fedex has likely stopped paying for old md11s and prefer get new planes. Now that's sad

Well they are quite similar looking although the MD-11 is bigger. There is however quite a difference in the flight deck with the DC-10 possessing a panel straight out of the 60s with lots of round 'steam' gauges, whereas the MD-11 has a glass panel more reminiscent of the Airbus or later Boeing panels. However I think it is fair to say that the MD systems are quite unique and require a significant learning curve to master them even if you are familiar with the Airbus or Boeing systems - if you don't want light then believe me this airliner is about as heavy as you can get!!

Apart from the poorer economics of a trijet, the MD-11 is regarded as a bit of a handful by many pilots, which may also be a factor in the demise of their numbers. Just look at the videos on You Tube of the FedEx crash in Japan about a year or two ago, where control was quickly lost during what appeared to be an otherwise straightforward landing, albeit in somewhat gusty winds. This thing is a bit of a hot rod!

Just to let you know, if you are contemplating getting the PMDG MD-11, it is available at a reduced price from the Flight Sim Pilot Shop at the moment.

I have heard a guy say that if they (MD) were to build a MD-12 that it was going to have 3 crew. A pilot, first officer, and a German Shepherd. The pilots job was to feed and take care of the dog and the dogs job was to bite the pilots if they touched the controls.

Joking aside, the MD-11 is heavily automated and easy to fly once you get the hang of it. Other than looks I would say that the MD-11 is about as far away from DC-10 as you can get and still call it a derivative though.
