Aerosoft have not made any changes to PMDG NGX. They only publish the boxed version and print the manual, hence their logo in it. I don't own the boxed version, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have written the manual either and it will just be the same as the PDFs that come with the download version from PMDG.

Thank you for your clarifying thoughts. I haven't seen the PDFs of the PMDG download version yet, but I think you might be correct. My Aerosoft handbook of 95 pages is just a tutorial for a short flight from Gatwick to Schiphol and concentrates on how to setup the FMC CDU for that particular routing only. Thanks.

Nice bird you are flying. Fly safe, Satchmo

Well... there was a payware Rafale from Rollus - the same guys who did that amazing freeware Mirage, but I'm saying "was" because I can't find it in stores anymore. Maybe it's discontinued for some reason, I don't know.

He was forced to withdraw it from sale by Dassault because he didn't get their permission to create and sell it. His latest product is a fantasy fighter that is based on what the love child of the Rafale and Typhoon might look like.

It's a shame really because it really was an excellent addon, luckily I purchased it before it was withdrawn and have it tucked away safe and sound :)

Prior to the Rafale he did a really nice freeware Mirage 2000-5 but only distributed it via his website. Actually getting hold of it was pretty fraught because the download was disabled on his website nearly all of the time because of bandwidth restrictions from his ISP.

Curiosity made me download PMDG's PDFs just to see what the real deal is. Aerosoft's 95 pages handbook which came with the DVD box covers the same titles, the same screen shots in the same sequence as PMDG's Tutorial # 1. Yes, there is a big difference; it's the logo which changed on every single page from PMDG to Aerosoft. This, and the fact where Aerosoft indicates on page 16 (vs. PMDG's page 0.00.12) "We've added....", made me believe the whole thing was created by Aerosoft.

Sorry for my greenhorn thoughts and I thank you and GeorgeLKMT for sharing your sharp senses with me.

To come back to your original question, Satchmo, An idea, that just came to my mind (regarding the night lighting being too bright): You could go to the MSFSX/SimObjects/Airplanes/Eurofighter[whatever that directory is called]/Texture, open the files referring to cockpit lightning( probably something like "cockpit_night", and make them dimmer. Don't forget to back up your changes first. I'm not sure if there's a similar way for the HUD, since that gauge will probaly need lots of files being edited. I'll see if I can find my Eurofighter package (should be somewhere out there) and see if I can come up with further info.

OE-LAT (Flo); I really appreciate your effort for coming back to my initial cry for help with Eurofighter's bright cockpit and HUD lights. Since then I have given up hope for a solution and was scheduling my night flights with other birds.

Yes, that would be fantastic if the problem could be handled through the files. But....

I'm afraid there will be a second problem. I may know a little about flying but I don't know anything about computers. I guess in case of a file correction, you had to walk (talk) me through the edits.

I just went through my FSX files on add-on Eurofighter and there is nothing indicating a night feature. Eurofighter shows 13 Texture folders: .au/.ge31/.ge73/.ge74/.gegsp/.it/.pr/.rf3/.rf11/.rf17/.rf29/.sa/.sp and all of them have in total hundreds of Bitmap images only.

I wonder if it would help submitting a bug-report to AFS-Design. I have done so to Aerosoft about their X-Plane 10 default F-4 flaw (of the missing DME indication); but never got a reply.

I will hang on about the Eurofighter and I will appreciate any further thoughts of yours.

Fly safe, Satchmo

Well, Satchmo, judging from what I've read on this forums about AFS's support, submitting a bug report won't have much effect at all. I'd really like to help you, but as I ain't got my EF disk at hand (and it's the older version), you'll probaly have to wait a month or so till I will report back (I promise, if I don't - remind me), unless I find another way of getting to those files in a legal way.

Btw, the .au etc files are the textures for the individual repaints.

Cheers,

Flo

Manny;

Talking about add-ons; I have been shopping for some add-ons yesterday in about five different Media Mega stores in town and I got a no splash for your wanted French Rafale. In addition, they checked all available supplier lists and came up with a "nothing". Sorry.

Thx Satchmo.

I hear there was an awesome Rafael addon that the Dassualt want it taken down..for copy right infringement. So its gone. I am looking for some lucky owners who may be willing to part with it for some $$$

You have the Rafale?

Want to sell it? :)

MAnny

Then, there is a marine version of Rafale, freeware, looking good but it has no cockpit (only 2d panels aliased from some default plane). But you can couple it with Hornet VC for example if you want and if you have Acceleration pack. Pick it up over here

Thx George

Just to let you know, Satchmo: I just downloaded the Demo version, so I 'll get to work on your problem a little bit faster than I assumed. Hopefully I'll find time to work on that by Wednesday, but can't promise. As much as I can tell from just looking into that files that have been installed, those respinsible for night lighting are the ones with the "*_LM.bmp".

I will report back as soon as I've figured that out

OE-LAT; Copy that. Thanks for your thoughts and I think you're right about the bug report. I'm very glad to wait a month or any other time you need. Rom wasn't build in one day! In case something positive comes up at my side, I'll let you know on this page. Thanks for your help, Satchmo

Hi

i just did a little experimenting with the dome version, this is what I came up with:

Before:

After:

I know, it's problably a bit too dark now, but nevertheless IMO it's way better than the original. I'll keep on working on that to get it a bit better. Regarding the HUD: I actually think it's too dark, not too bright.

OE_LAT;

Thank you, this is great work you are doing. Yes, it may be a bit dark but it's hard to tell on the screenshot. I rather have your dark cockpit than Aerosoft's mega brightness. Unfortunately, keeping my fingers crossed for you to be able to adjust it a little more is the only thing I can do to help.

Keeping up the faith, Satchmo

Believe me, it's too dark. And btw, I think that the EF's cockpit lighting is, like in most fighter aircraft, greenish or at least (like in most commercial airplanes) reddish, but unfortuantely, I haven't found any proof for this.

Still working on that thing, and I hope I can report progress soon.

Cheers,

Yes, you are right, cockpit flood lights used to be kind of reddish and EF's HUD and cockpit lights are solid green in a very bright and shiny way. I wonder why designers have not thought (at least) of a day-night switch like the FSX default F-18 hornet has.

So we might have to change jobs and fly PMDG 737 NGX instead. It has such a perfect dim system almost for each instrument induvidually.

I wish you further luck for your work and I wish I could be of any help, Satchmo

  • 1 month later...

I just got me the Eurofighter add-on made by AFS-Design and I'm most impressed.

I guess the superb HUD and cockpit layout must have been designed by a pilot. Aircraft handling and flight dynamics are perfect and the auto pilot modes have the capability of an airliner, including flight data calculations like range, fuel, time remaining etc.

The hook allows trap landings on carriers while the powerful engines get you off without catapult. This aircraft is a must for me!!!

However, the only bother are the bright HUD and cockpit lights at night and I can't find the dim knob.

May be someone has found it already? If so, please let me know.

Fly safe, Satchmo

Hi all,

I've had this product in the past (version 2) with a huge disappointment and I checked the differences with the latest release on the website in order to see if there were improvements. Here's what I think:

1) AFS-Design Eurofighter can be hardly considered a plane. The fact that it has all the features that you like doesn't mean that it's the perfect rendition of the EFA. All the contrary, considering what a real EFA pilot that I know said about it. They have at least improved the cockpit art (finally!) and the avionics but the rest is still the same old toy.

2) The HUD is totally unreal as much as the rest. Dino Cattaneo's F-35 HUD and HMDS renditions are probably the closest to reality at the moment. The actual layout of course is almost completely classified but...not completely! And AFS-Design didn't have a clue of it. I'd rather use the Sludge Hornet's one.

3) The wingman and the tractor features are simply ridiculous. No one would be able to do formation flight like that (get a real wingman and fly in multiplayer!) and I'd like to meet someone interested in driving a tractor in FSX/FS9!

4) Tailhook is used for emergency landing on military bases equipped with barriers that work exactly like a carrier trap but the aircraft structure is not built for that.

5) If you really want to stress this fake carrier capability and you like catapult launches you just have to add to the aircraft.cfg the [launch_assistance] section (taken from the default f-18 for example or customizing it to suit the actual EFA size and position of the front gear).

6) I may look outdated but I still prefer the Alphasim Typhoon that, with some due modifications, in my opinion is still better than this in the model, in the cockpit art and in the behaviour. At least until some real data will be published and we'll be able to make an honest comparison. Until then, I believe that AFS produces only (beautiful?) toys.

Sorry Satchmo, no offense.

Hi; Satchmo, I'm terribly sorry I didn't reply earlier, to be honest I forgot.

I have not yet managed to make the lighting dimmer nor will I be able in the next time, due to learning for some rather hard and important exams.

Furthermore, I've found out that JustFlight is working on an EF, which I am going to pick up as soon as they release it.

Flo
