Does RC help prevent ground traffic getting stuck?

Featured Replies

Hi there, sorry if this has been discussed before, i searched through some topics I found some similar to mine but none answering exactly what I wanted to know, I'm considering buying RC because i'm tired of the default AI and all of its frustrating problems, one problem in particular is aircraft getting stuck on the ground due to traffic conflicts...for example at PHX if an aircraft (either mine or an AI) is taxing to a gate at the same time another aircraft (either mine or an AI) is taxiing from a gate, or any time two aircraft will both be on the same taxiway but going opposite directions, ATC will tell both aircraft to 'hold position and caution other traffic' causing both aircraft to stop and get 'stuck' causing other aircraft behind them to build up, if i'm one of the aircraft i'll just ignore it and keep going but its annoying seeing so many aircraft backed up coming in and out of gates and not moving at all, and eventually just 'disappearing' because they've been static for too long, does RC do a better job of preventing this from happening? and if not is there any other addon out there to improve this issue? (if this isn't the right forum to post this in sorry!!) I'm using FS2004 and UT if that helps at all.

Thanks in advance!

If you have a user paid registered FSUIPC, it has a hot-key assignable traffic zapper function that will "nuke" an ai aircraft in front of you within a narrow range and close to you. Sometimes an ai (not under RC control) will stop in a head to head conflict with you or another ai. If these ai are stuck in your path you could then nuke each one as necessary. This is not realistic but it does avoid you waiting until FS makes the aircraft disappear which can take several minutes.

FS should be redirecting ai to avoid this however it sometimes fails. Sometimes there is a defect in the afd airport file (known colloquially as an afcad) that may have open taxi paths that do not allow FS to figure out a resolution.

If you wish to restart all ai just advance the FS time by one minute or if you have a user paid registration for FSUIPC you can set a hot key to toggle between two traffic densities which will restart ai. Some versions of Active Sky weather have a button to refresh ai as well.

I can't think of anything else at this moment.

ai smooth v1.2 is in the FSX Utilities library here but is also for FS9. It allows the user to control separation of arriving traffic which can assist in thinning out ground traffic density.

FS9 Configurator version 1.6 is in the the FS9 Utilities section here. It can adjust taxi speeds among other things. A slight boost can provide better runway clearing.

To check for open taxi paths use ADE9X and use file\open direct from .bgl if an add-on and find the file that contains runway and taxiway information or you can also open default stock airports. Then run the fault finder. Use of afcad221 for FS9 only is not recommended as it can strip data from complex afd type files. ADE9x is freeware available from:

http://www.scruffyduck.org.uk/filemanager/navega.php?id=2&PHPSESSID=9b6ca622f81a684056391ed52f991966

where you can also get tutorials if you decide to learn it for editing. I recommend if you do this to use the two step method to get the finished product. First save your changes as a project and then compile the project to a .bgl. Projects contain internal code used for compiling that are not accessible if you decompile from a .bgl you edited. If you just want to check an existing design for faults then it can be used for viewing like afcad.

thanks for the suggestions i'll give them a shot, i'll still probably get RC anyways because everyone seems to love it, and i do love the idea of not being set up on a 45 mile final! or adding an extra 30 mins to my flight due to a go-around :)

RC assists in preventing ground ai from encroaching on the runway but only when you are on the last few miles of approach and on tower frequency so take enough gas for a go-around :)

You sure won't get those rediculous 45 mile finals, but be careful if you are told to "go around". Recently I failed to hear the go around (very infrequent command but it does occur). After landing I was sent to see the FSDO examiner and was issued a 6 month suspension of my ticket. Ouch!! Slapped wrists can occur in RC. Fun ;-)

In RC4 if you are on a downwind entry to a traffic pattern you typically get a fifteen mile final. It does have an option in the in-flight menu to request a short final. This was added to accommodate smaller, slower aircraft used when conditions permit.

And RC will occassionally deny your request for a short final. It's probably the best the flight sim world has to offer, other than VATSIM, for reality.
