August 21, 201213 yr Author I'm more or less in the same boat. Time is precious and when it comes down to it, I'd rather be flying. OSM2XP is a nice middle of the road solution that at least gives me objects on the ground in a lot of the areas I fly in. Download the .pbf file, load it in to OSM2XP, make a couple of mouseclicks, and hit Build. Pretty simple. I like having something to show for such little work. Mainly, I'm like Geofa and Alan_A. I'll just wait and see if other developers will follow Aerosoft's lead in bringing high quality scenery into X-Plane. September 9, 201213 yr I am kinda mixed on it... I got the freeware data for California where I now live (thanks Tom Knudsen) along with a few freeware packages available for San Diego. It does look much better than it did before. However the autogen buildings are just not right, and my area where I live is non existent (roads/buildings), and office buildings are placed in areas where for sure nothing of the type should be and in general it just doesn't "look right" including bodies of water. A complicated deal-and the other sim isn't perfect either-but somehow a little closer. I hope xplane can get it closer too-along with additions of the incredible aerosoft cities that are amazing. OSM scenery is made to make it more plausible, not more realistic. OSM is also based on a wiki type of collobration which means you have an unknown variable that any building is correctly placed on openstreetmap project. Ps.. September 9, 201213 yr Well Tom-thanks for your work-I have donwloaded it all and it makes things much better and your contribution is greatly appreciated. Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
September 9, 201213 yr Maybe it is OSM but when I try to generate scenery for Wiley Post field in Oklahoma City it does not generate anything. Using OSM in XPX I get good renditions for Hillsboro Municipal near Portland, OR. Have not tried using OSM2XP for that. I like the tool though and plan to see about other places I've lived such as Austin, TX. Take care, Thanks, TonyK53
September 9, 201213 yr Maybe it is OSM but when I try to generate scenery for Wiley Post field in Oklahoma City it does not generate anything. If you're using OSM2XP, you need buildings or forests or objects (lighthouses, windturbines, water towers). There's nothing around Wiley Post field, only roads and rivers: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=35.53&lon=-97.6411&zoom=14&layers=M Oklahoma citizens first have to contribute to the OpenStreetMap project: http://www.openstreetmap.us/ http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Beginners%27_guide Georges - OpenStreetMap - Ubuntu GNU/Linux -

September 9, 201213 yr MdMax, I would disagree with you mostly because I was born and raised there. WP has houses and small businesses along Rockwell (the street on the east side of WP). There are businesses on the corner of 50th and Rockwell too. It has been 14 years since I lived there so I can only imagine density has grown. There are also housing additions near this GA airport. Thanks, Thanks, TonyK53
September 9, 201213 yr There are also housing additions near this GA airport. As I said, there's nothing around this airport in OpenStreetMap: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=35.53&lon=-97.6411&zoom=14&layers=M If you know about real life buildings near this location, and if you want to see them in X-Plane, then you have to contribute to the OpenStreetMap project. This is an airfield where buildings are available: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=49.15009&lon=5.933&zoom=15&layers=M Georges - OpenStreetMap - Ubuntu GNU/Linux -
