On the A330 we have a switch just inside the flight deck door on the left hand side, just like you would in a house, and that turns on the dome light. And just for the record, I can't recall the last time I've entered a flight deck when it was cold and dark, you're talking at least 3+ years...

And every pilot I know carries a flashlight in his flight bag so there should be no need looking for the switch in the dark.

In my case, I think I have 3. One's a handheld magnetic one, one is a headlamp, and the last one is a maglite. I'm pretty sure the latter is more of a weapon, really...

I don't think there's anything subtle about it. It's large, and casts the illumination of the sun.

There is this story of a pilot who got his small pocket knife taken away and when he asked why the TSA said no weapons allowed onboard while rolling his eyes. The pilot mentioned that they don't need to bring a weapon as they have a crash ax in the cockpit, the agent just had this dumbfounded look and didn't say a word.

That's exactly it like, yet at one point in time, they were almost wary of letting you take shoe laces on board the aircraft... :mellow: I'm the pilot of the aircraft, I'm sure I could think of a million and one ways of crashing the aircraft if I wanted, I don't need a nail clippers or pocket blade to do it, honestly , what do they think I'll do, scratch everyone to death??? :rolleyes:

 

Oh well, now I've probably gone and put myself on the TSA's radar, better prepare for another groping down next time I fly, for "Security" purposes... :mellow:

I can't remember the last time I went into a 'cold dark' cockpit.

Normally the engineers will be onboard completing the ETOPS check prior to departure and, if the APU isn't already on for a cup of tea (Unusual for it not to be!) , then, normally, both ground power connections will be plugged in.

 

If the cockpit IS dark then the battery master will be pushed (middle of the overhead panel on the left hand side) then either the ground power switches selected or, as long as it's clear, the APU will be started (closer to the front, below the battery on the left hand side of the overhead panel, rotate to start, hold for a second and release). Dome lights can then be turned on, normally through the 'Storm light' switch.

 

It takes a while for the beast to 'wake up', interestingly the FMGC 'Route Request' and 'Wind Request' seem to be releuctant to kick in until the ADIRU system is up and running!

Another neat thing to do is to tell that cabin crew when to arm/disarm the doors now that we have a door page unless Boeing doesn't display the slide status.

It does, door page, either an 'A' for automatic or an 'M' for manual.

I carry one in my truck for that very reason. lol, LED version 3 cell, its bright and you can bash brains in if you need to defend yourself.
