Computer running out of available memory?

Featured Replies

"this system runs FS9 for weeks at a time"Could you please qualify this a little more? I have experienced memory leaks from FS9 without the presence of 3rd party software; this is one of the first elimination steps I performed. I'm not sure that PS is good defense for FS though; as you would really have to have a dual monitor setup to run both apps at "normal operating tempo" which is to say, flying at 33,000ft on autopilot (keeping an eye on instruments atleast) whilst working on a >550MB in PS (presumably re-rendering several times over). If you do have a dual monitor setup, then I just don't buy that at all (certainly not in the case of having FS up for "weeks")...I'm not refuting anything anyone said here (except that FS9 has no memory leaks whatsoever), but I'm very curious about the particulars with your FS9 "uptime"....Cheers.

How do I determine if a particular file is a landclass file? (assuming it isn't obvious from the file name)ThanksDavid

Yes my TI4600 is a duel head, but it would be impossible to run full windowed and do what I do in PhotoShop, globalMapper etc as there are many un-do levels, layers as well as large chunks going to and fro from the clip board, FS runs in the background and is used most of the time for reference while I work on the final touches to an area that may take a month or two to complete before the next area is tackled, but it is also used to run long hall in CS727 in VC mode without having to restart. I have been doing it this way since I started this project back in 1993 (was manipulating 600mb files on 16mb system)and FS9 as loaded as it is has been among the most stable even on this highly overclocked system. It isn't luck, just a well maintained system running good software, no crapy utilities hogging resources. There are times of course when FS has to be shut down, for instance when I resize some of the larger Bmps for final use I use a program other than PS that uses a time consuming Lanczos3 filter and it my require a few hours to complete, if FS is running it may take twice that.Is a vanilla install of FS9 completely "leak free"? In view of what is known under long term use sure, we cant really say that absolute, I don't know of any other program that needs as many resources as FS9 that you can say that about, but in comparison against real "leakers" I think we would have to say that buy itself FS9 is very solid and leak free. If you experience otherwise I would look for other bad aps running or a fs9 mucked up with conflicting AI, landclass as well as poor choice of "special" settings in the FS.cfg. Hope that makes sense for you.

You exeperiences make complete sense to me, but my experiences are apparently different from yours, that's all.I run PS (CS) & ACAD2004 on my machine with very capable hardware (except for my Ti4600) & this brings FS9 (with no add ons) to its knees in 23 minutes flat ....from 1 GB to 4MB (all with a 3GB swap file on a completely dedicated HDD)!I don't use this configuration anymore (because of that) & have seperated FS9 onto 2 RAID0 disks, coupled with a seperate startup profile. As a result, I can incorporate 3rd party solutions like the rest of the world & fly happy. Although I have plenty scratch disk room setup for PS, I've not read anywhere that CS was "not written for windows"...& I've read a lot. I presume this applies to your version, in which case I would not bring your claim to question.I'm curious what difference you noticed with your aperture size change on th Ti4600....any tangible difference over 63MB?Cheers.

>>How do I determine if a particular file is a landclass file?>(assuming it isn't obvious from the file name)>>Thanks>David>>>You can't. If you suspect that a scenery has a Landclass file and it's not apparent ask the creator. He will know. Also ask what the name of the file is, then re-name it with an LC as in XYZ_lc.bgl. It will still work. After that move it to the FS9sceneryBASEscenery folder or to your Landclassscenery folder.Joe W

Photoshop is written in MacApp, (Macintosh application development environment) And still runs best on the Mac platform.>I'm curious what difference you noticed with your aperture>size change on th Ti4600....any tangible difference over>63MB?>>Cheers.Absolutely! I suggest you grab any good benchmarking program that has some DX based test and try settings of 128 and 256 different systems prefer different settings but a majority of them hit higher marks with a large aperture.I think I did some aperture comparisons in this old GF3 vs GF4 review from a few years back you can check: http://www.frontiernet.net/~pleatzaw/revie...%20vs%20GF4.htmEdit> Sorry, no info there, but doing your own testing is still the best anyway.

Hi all.The earliest thread of the landclass leak was here:http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...ing_type=searchThe problem is inherited from FS2002. In FS2002, large textureless blocks of color identified the missing local texture. For FS2004, the sim was instructed to search for an alternate base location for textures if they are not found in the local "texture" directory. This was done to solve the problem from FS2002.Unfortunately, the allocation for memory for the texture preceeds the find of the texture... and so a double allocation of memory is made if the texture is not first found locally. But the de-allocation of memory is made just once, and that is the "leak".I recently found another cause of memory loss concerning textures:http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...20812&mode=fullDick

Thanks JoeDavid

Thanks Dick. This answers one of my questions. I'm doing Florida Bridges as I find them and replace them and I had a question about this with them. Just to make sure, recommend that they be installed WITH OUT a texture folder. This seems to work great. This is a ongoing project that is slow in production. I have to find the bridges that are scrap piles first.ThanksJoe W.

The first thing to check when you get an "out of memory" meessage is that the computer actually *has* ran out of memory. These messages can appear for all sorts of reasons like corrupted files, faulty memory, as well as addons etc. Just hit ctrl+alt+del before closing the message and check memory usage. Typically it's around 400MB for FS.If it is very high (1GB?) then it's probably a memory leak such as the wellknown landclass bug. I had that happen recently when not paying attention to where I placed my bgl's. Memory usage would increase by 2MB/second until FS crashed at 1.5GB memory allocation because it ran out of memory.

After a 500 nm trip in the PMDG 737, as I was about to intercept the ILS at London Stansted, I switched to spot view, and I got the "Your computer has run out of available memory..." message again. Now I'm ready to try your suggestions, but I have a few questions.Hyperthreading (HT): Any disadvantages to disabling HT? I don't know what it does, but the name sounds fancy. ;-)Gaming profile: I used to be careful about terminating programs running in the background, but with this system I have good fps and so on even with some background services running (like Norton Antivirus and firewall), so I haven't bothered with it. But if you think it may help, why not? I don't know anything about creating a "profile", so it would be great if you could provide some instructions.Swap file: I have Windows set to handle the swap file size, and the recommended size becomes 1534 MB (I have no idea whether this is a standard value or system specific). That is on my C partition which is 107 GB (97 GB free at the moment). The D partition (111 GB, also 97 GB free), on which I have FS2004, does not have a swap file. Should I set up a swap file for the D partition as well?I had some long hauls planned but it looks like I have to put them on hold, at least for a few days!Martin767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing

Yeah, it happened again, so I'd like to keep this thread alive for a little longer. In other words: bump.Martin767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing

  • 1 month later...

Are talking about the PF Useage graph number? Mine is at 1.05GB. I started to get these out of memory errors and I run a machine with 1GB of RAM and a 3.2 chip. Guess its time to go hunt some lc files.

>Probably you have tried to manually set the Virtual Memory to>a fixed value, or have been sucked into the `advice` to set>Windows to . Let Windows handle it.>Right click My Computer - Properties - Advanced - Performance>- Advanced and you'll find the fields you need>>Either that, or you've picked up a virus.>>And the 56.72 drivers may be the current ones on the Nvidia>site, but WHQL versions are available at 61.36, as well as>beta 61.45 and 61.71>Try www.guru3d.com>>Hope you get it sorted.>>AllcottWhat do you (or anyone) suggest we set these settings at? My virtual memory settings are set at 1536 and 3072. When inside FS, my page file useage is up around 900MB to 1GB. Is this normal? Two long flights now have resulted in "out of memory errors". I have checked all my scenery files and only have Simflyers stuff and Fly Tampa stuff in there. Very wierd what is going on.

I had posted a similar problem here:http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...id=208672&page=I didn't realize there was a similar thread. I am having the same problems, check out what I wrote in my thread to clue in on my similar problem.I know my issue can't be a landclass, cause I have a fresh install of FS9 without any addons.I am really stumped with this problem.
