Strange Texture issue, maybe GPU related (random)?

Featured Replies

I'm having an issue with my fsx build that i'm working on..

For reference its an ati 5850 1GB card, i7 2600k at 4.7ghz on a p8p7 deluxe board.

This is a "sortof" fresh new build of FSX.

It started as clean build on a Win 8 box with the ati 12.8 catalyst driver per this thread...

But as of now to get my fps back to normal, i've changed the drive letter on my old fsx installed partition/drive to something else, then created a new partition using the same drive letter and did a fresh install of fsx, then utx, then gtx, then rex, then pnw with latest service patch and 1s2 airport to the "new" partition (so file wise its new, but registry may still have remnants, but it all points to the same location).

I then ran a basic benchmark (as in that thread) and got good results (29.12 fps over 420 seconds with the sliders there, target 30).

So i decided to then toy around at 1s2.. suddenly you could see parts of the hills in the distance not filling in, so parts of the hills appeared as particles off in the distance..

Then I exited and restarted fsx to the fsxmark07 flight.. and got this:

weird1b.jpg

I'm think this is purely display card related, as it can often run just fine without issue. I've not tweaked the fsx.cfg file at all since the fresh install (and i get a solid 30 fps on the benchmark for 420 seconds using my high sliders).

Although i've had this issue (in the past) where when i install rex textures the screen starts to get broken up and I have to move my mouse to see parts of menus like below (not a huge deal, it never seemed to affect anything else).. not sure if its related:

weird2.jpg

Anyone seen this before and knows whether its a lack of bufferpools in the cfg or maybe just an ati card/driver glitch..

Thanks in advance

Also.. sometimes after the test flight completes, it returns to what should be the beginning with full Virtual Cockpit but instead there is no cockpit.. restarting the machine does not fix the issue. I'm not overclocking the GPU either.

Hi

have you tried turning down all the settings to a basic setup and see if this occurs.Ie autogen ,traffic ,ai aircraft ,scenery settings

have you backed up fsx.cfg and then let fsx rebuild you a new one??

have you got a new fsx.cfg from ventubo ..

http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html

our rigs are very similar (i have 6870) at 4.6ghz.

this is only a suggestion ,once you have this sorted buy Acronis True image Home and save you whole FSX folder and your C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft to a safe place this has saved me a lot of hassle and reinstalling fsx takes 5 minutes instead of 10 hours.

just another thought.

you say that it runs fine sometimes.have you looked at your cpu fan and made sure it's clean.i've heard of this before when overheating is a problem

Thanks for the reply..

I didnt try lowering sliders as of yet.. the fsx.cfg was a rebuilt one.. brand new etc.. I didn't do the venetubo.. I've done it before and I know pretty much now based on a few guides, which settings work with my config and which dont.. so for now i'm not really adding any settings except LOD 6.5 and 4096 for textures (and wideaspect).

Yep I use Acronis exclusively.. in fact, Acronis 2013 just came out yesterday and has full windows 8 support. Previously I have been using the free Paragon image tool for windows 8.

I think besides the roaming folder, the programdata folder should be backed up as well perhaps.

As of this moment I got frustrated and restored my OS drive back to before i started adding things to the registry (installing fsx).. I kept my full blown fsx image handy though, but for now i'm starting clean on a new fsx partition, though dummy me didnt back up the roaming before I wiped C (i think it may be possible to utilize the full blown image without roaming with some effort though if I later find out it was just a setting that was off and dont feel like spending 80 hours reinstalling everything).

Since you're having display issues outside of FSX, you're probably dealing with a buggy driver or a GPU issue. Try another driver and test again. The FSX issue you're having can also be caused by running the BP=0 config tweak.

In my case I dont have a bufferpools section.. wouldn't this be the same as BP=0 though? The only real issue outside of FSX is when I click the install textures button in REX.. the screen getting blacked out until you move windows around (blocky), but then again, i've had that for a long while now, various driver versions and on Windows 7 too, so I just assumed it was some sort of REX anomaly.

Rendering anomalies in multiple applications which persist across driver installs starts to lead one down the path of GPU failure, but you could always reload the O.S. before you get there.

Thats funny ,i had the REX blackout.since installing essentials that's gone.also that LOD 6.5 autogen circle thingy.that puts a lot of stress on your gpu.

I know it looks nice not seeing the trees and stuff dropping in,but that is quite a heavy hit there.

don't want to tell you how to suck eggs ..I always backup the whole of C: (bought a cheapish 1TBdrive) and all of my FSX drive on F:\

also i use Mozbackup for all my Bookmarks and emails.last week i had SSD boot failure (RMA'd)took me less than half an hour to be back to normal.I could have kissed Mr Acronis

cheers

Yeah I acronis both C and my FSX O drive, two images :) But since this is the first (well now second) go round on putting everything on a separate drive i dont have much to go back on :)

I set LOD to 6.5 and did benchmark comparisons.. the loss in fps was only around 1fps on the average test (from 4.5 to 6.5 on a 420 second fsxmark07 test with my current sliders).. Setting it to 6.5 didnt stop trees from "popping" in, just below my wings though, they still do that.

Ah so my gpu hasnt been to blame for the "blackout" rex thing, but rex ess. does the same for me (with 12.8 catalyst, the latest for win 8). At least I know I wasn't crazy on seeing the blackout now.

REX isn't causing your menus not to display properly in Windows. There's more wrong with your computer.

That blackout/menu issue only ever happens due to the install button being clicked in rex.. never an issue anywhere else.

After going back to my drive before I started installing FSX (C drive) and starting fresh on the fsx install drive, i'm not experiencing any issues with FSX itself so far.. smooth as butter at around 33.00 fps (unlimited) on fsxmark07 or 29.10 (locked at 30) with my higher sliders and fsx cfg changes. I did get the blackout though with rex.

hi

i thought that the LOD 6.5 thingy was meant to stop the popping in of AG under the nose.

I could be wrong because i've never used it.seem to remember reading that it expands the circle around the aircraft so that Autogen loads further away.

I'm just trying to find a cause for your anomolies.perhaps with the amount of AG you are trying to load the card might be getting very hot.causing it to fail.
