Relevant tweaking for laptops

Featured Replies

Greetings,

I've been following this forum specially after the dx10 shader fix. Seeing how helpful everybody is I thought I'd consult you as experts right now as I struggle to spend time flying rather than tweaking. Right now tweaking/testing is at 60% while actual flying is 40%.

I have consulted NickNs tweaks, read kostas guide and many others on tweaking fsx for smooth flying however I cannot seem to find relevant guides for laptops. I do know laptops are not the best way to enjoying smooth flights in fsx, but bare with me as I am working abroad and traveling a lot, not having a fixed location yet = no desktop pc.

I got the ASUS N56VZ with the ivy bridge i7 3610qm running @ 3.2ghz together with a gt 650m. Within the fsx.cfg I have the affinitymask=14 and the bp=0 together with he highmemfix tweak. Honestly I do not notice any difference. Nevertheless dx10 is smoother for me too than dx9, and I want to keep trying reaching smooth flight in dx10 with this laptop.

Addons are rex:e, mytraffic 5.4, gex and recently shade. On to the points that need fixing:

1. The sparkling wave effect provided by rex is not working under dx10. Instead I get still water, meaning no moving waves, and a rather weird milky effect on the water (daytime). Resetting to default water fixes it, but I would like to have realistic water. Rex water works in dx9. Also in dx10 the water reflection is rather pixelated..

2. Clouds seem to be a frame killer. Non-hd clouds from rex are used. 2048x2048 pretty much yields the same result on frames as 1024x1024 do.

3. Toolbox help not showing in dx10 vc, this is mentioned in another thread on this forum. I guess no fix yet. Do not know what heading or crs i set in specific planes without the tooltip(?) popping up.

4. Does as2012 work better than rex in dx10? In terms of textures specifically water.

5. Shimmering in the water when reflecting land, mid2x and high2x all the same.

My fps is locked at 30, which is achievable in most areas except airports and cities. Car traffic @12% and aviation traffic @20%.

In short, if anyone knows anything helpful about fsx+laptop, please share your insights. Looking forward to intersting discussions, and thanx in advance!

Here is a screenshot explaining the weird "milky" water.

Hi GR: Sorry - I know diddley about laptop performance, but your gpu appears to be adequate. Someone here will be able to give you some better info if you were to post your fsx.cfg and your Inspector settings here - OK?

Thanks,

Make sure your water setting in FSX.cfg is not any higher than 5 otherwise your water will look ugly. Same goes with do not lower it below 5. I use FEX/AS2012 and the water looks great at the 5 setting.

2. Clouds seem to be a frame killer. Non-hd clouds from rex are used. 2048x2048 pretty much yields the same result on frames as 1024x1024 do. There's another post here in this forum regarding clouds being a framerate killer. Any implementation of real weather is a framerate killer so it's hard for me to agree. If I do not have real weather enabled and fsx is rendering the default, my fps do not suffer whatsoever.

3. Toolbox help not showing in dx10 vc, this is mentioned in another thread on this forum. I guess no fix yet. Do not know what heading or crs i set in specific planes without the tooltip(?) popping up. Doubt you will ever see a fix for this issue in DX10 as there is no Microsoft developers to upgrade the code.

4. Does as2012 work better than rex in dx10? In terms of textures specifically water. This is what I have heard but I think it's very difficult to prove. Depends on what weather is loaded, the type of weather (and of course the number and layers of clouds), and whether you load textures from AS2012 or not.

5. Shimmering in the water when reflecting land, mid2x and high2x all the same. Again, this fix was found when we started running configurations based on Steve's Shader Fix for DX10. The setting is 5 for water (not sure if that's high2x's or not).

My fps is locked at 30, which is achievable in most areas except airports and cities. Car traffic @12% and aviation traffic @20%. I have my car traffic @10. My aviation traffic is the same as yours. Several posters have indicated raising car traffic to 100% will not affect fps. I have always been under the assumption that anything above 10% is not good but I changed mine to 100% and saw no change whatsoever in the fps. However, 100% car traffic looks horrible as cars are all over the place. Aviation traffic is a different story as aircraft have flight plans associated with them and these flight plans are loaded all over the world and not just where you are flying. I think your aviation traffic is okay but be careful with the AI traffic as that should be no higher than 40%.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Jim

Thanks for the heads up. Water is still unfixable unfortunatly, and yes the setting is @ 5 in the cfg file. Interesting thing with the car traffic, ama have to try that out. I thought they were the biggest frame killers so havent really tried anything above 12%.

What about the manually input tweaks in the cfg file? Is Affinitymask helpful or not? the i7 3610qm is a turbo boost processor, meaning it "overclocks" itself when under heavy load and underclocks itself when not in demand. Pretty much the same the with the mobile GPU (GT 650m).

And BP=0, if I try BP=1 such as Paul here, what should be the RejectThreshold?

Will post my fsx.cfg and inspector settings as per request.

I've been running FSX on a laptop (Lenovo W510) for the past couple of months and from your specs, you should be able to run it a lot better than I can. There are a bunch of things I had to do get mine running properly such as a BIOS update, latest nVidia drivers, and tweaking the services that are run when I play FSX. Word Not Allowed's tweaks and Paul's DX10 guide get me running pretty well. As was stated earlier, clouds are a real killer and I think I'm regretting buying REX Essentials now as I don't use it anymore. Currently, I have my sliders pretty high and have decent frame rates with anti-aliasing on but I'm fighting a battle with stuttering. Biggest challenge with my laptop is managing heat so I clean the heat sink every couple of days and have a cooling pad underneath to help get rid of heat.

Good luck!!!

Sorry been away for a while.

Could not figure out how to attach a file so here is a simple copy and paste of my fsx.cfg. Sorry for the long post this creates. Cannot get the water to loose the whiteness, that is my primary objective. Moreover Are the BP and other tweaks relevant for my system or not? Also since my GPU is optimus (Intel 4000 - GT 650, simply technology that takes away freedom of choice!), there are always two displays written in the cfg.

From the pic posted earlier - the water looks pretty normal for a low-level shot. Colour and Texture/wave "type" can be changed with ActiveSky2012.

Perhaps not what you wanted to hear, GR, but the figures you have, and that I've marked for a change would push any overclocked 2600K and a 580 to the limits!! :O :(

Alright there Paul, thanx for the feedback. Had a bit of a laugh noticing my typo on the jobscheduler. Not much difference after correcting it though, but the first step of "cleaning" my cfg.

Bloom on or off does not really impact performance much on my system.

Car traffic was at 10% first but hearing from jim in another thread that it does not seem to affect fps much, i tried for 40, aaand the impact was so-so. I think i will revert back to 12 or something though just in case.

Lod too high? Hmmm ok, will revert back, hopefully not so many objects pooping up in the scenery.

Other than that, will try out your suggestions. Although you have to understand, that water is definetly not normal. Another problem that it stands still, meaning in dx10 i do not seem to have any wave animation. The texture kind of moves slightly but without any "wave effect/animation" of any kind.

Nevertheless, thanks!

Good stuff, GR. To get any kind of water animation FSX is usually set to 4 or 5, and only 6 if BP=0, but the one thing I've noticed is that from 1000 feet or so in a steep turn one can watch the whitecaps slowly rolling over, and this is how I've always perceived them in the real world. Mostly FSX waves have always appeared (to me) to be far too large, and with a "flow" that appears to go right into the land surface, especially noticeable if it's a cliff-type shore. DX10 water, on the other hand - doesn't have that pronounced "flow", and has much smaller, tighter waves, with much more realistic "look". I'd like to see some other shots, though. That "whiteness" that you mentioned in the first post can be dealt with, as it was by Bojote in DX9, but Steve won't post a fix until he's happy. He is working in this area right now, so we can likely look forward to an additional "fix" that will address other anomalies/complaints in a fairly short time.

[JobScheduler] ?. Yes - it doesn't appear to make the slightest difference on my machine, either, GR, and, as FSX will only use real cores, anyway - the hyperthreading can be turned off. I removed it from the mix a few weeks ago.

All the Best!

peej
