Need help building my new rig!
SirStiggie replied to RancidViper's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcOnly thing I'd change is the cooler. The H110 or any other 280mm AIO would be a better option especialy if OC'd is on the cards.

P3D 3.0 SLI
I've been doing more testing now that I've fixed an issue I was having with Active Sky Next and I am really happy with the performance of V3 with SLI. It is definitely making better use of SLI and has taken pretty much everything I have thrown at it within reason. Its interesting to see how both cards behave when going into and out of areas with heavy clouds and or scenery. The clock speed on both cards would ramp up going into these areas and when there are little or no clouds or scenery, the first card's frequency would drop while the second remains high. Not sure why this happens as I though it would use the first card. FPS is a bit better than 2.5 but the choppines I had with panning around, especially in complex VC's is nowhere near as bad as 2.5 for the same scenario. Hopefully, LM continues to tweak v3 to make even better use of SLI.

P3D V3, Nvidia surround and SLI
I do have SLI but currently only run 1 4K monitor with my cards (980 Ti). I don't get significantly more FPS than I did in 2.5. What I do get is a significantly smoother experience with none of the artifacts and crashes I had with 2.5. For example, at FSDT KFLL with heavy clouds and some traffic in the PMDG 777, I am in the high 20's to low 30's. This is with higher settings than I had in 2.5. From monitoring with MSI afterburner, I do see P3D using both cards significantly harder than 2.5 did. I've seen on other forums posts with significantly better FPS than 2.5. I have not seen that, just an overall better experience using SLI than I had with 2.5. Please note I have not done any tweaking/tuning with nVidia Inspector though.

P3D 3.0 SLI
I was on the fence about purchasing V3 because of all the issues I had with 2.5 on my system (SLI 980 Ti's) but I bit the bullet with the knowledge that I could get a refund if it did not pan out. I am happy I did. I am not getting the FPS I have read others are getting but what I am getting is a level of smoothness I never got in 2.5. I am using the same or one level up on my scenery settings and it is so smooth. I do not have any weird artifacts nor do I have the issue of losing SLI functionality when accessing the menu. I am very impressed and look forward to getting updated installers for Active Sky, Flight1 GTN750, and the other add-on's I use a lot. Is it worth the money? To me it is as it "feels" like a new sim. Back to flying

Prepar3d V3 Release date Wednesday 30th September
Same here. It also appears that they fixed a bunch of issues related to SLI. Too bad I have to buy a "new" sim to get those fixes..

P3D v2.5 SLI test results, up 33%
I am back in the SLI camp with the install of a second 980 Ti and the results, so far, pretty much mirrors my earlier tests with two 980's. I do get more FPS but not a massive jump. What I do have is a much smoother experience especially when under load with heavy clouds. I'm curious about using NI though. Rob, You mentioned you don't use NI. Is there any reason why? Do you modify any global settings in the NVidia control panel? To those that do use NI, do you notice a difference in performance either way?

To anyone getting the 0x80070004 - 0x3000d on install
Thank you very much for this. I wish I had found it sooner as I spent 3 hours trying to get past this error. Great work!!

Skylake is here!
SirStiggie replied to OmniAtlas's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcIn my opinion, a Skylake system will not make that much of a difference in the overall performance of FSX than a well tuned Ivy Bridge / Devils Canyon or Sandy Bridge CPU system. It will be quite interesting to see how much higher they can overclock than a 4790k as well as their thermal performance. Not holding out much hope though,

GTX 980 TI or plain GTX 980?
SirStiggie replied to Pete S's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcI've been through a 970, 980, 980's in SLI, and now a Ti and I am quite happy with the Ti especially after it was watercooled. FSX performed the same with all of them. P3D is a different matter. I also play other games as well which is why I went with the Ti. For FSX only, the Ti is a waste of money, so is a 980 and possibly, a 970. You will get better performance for FSX by getting a stable overclock on the 4790k with decent RAM and a GTX 960. I played FSX for a few weeks on the integrated Intel GPU and had very good performance, especially after I got my CPU stable at 4.8GHz. If you're looking at P3D or any other game though, the Ti is worth the money over the 980.

gtx 980 ti launches
SirStiggie replied to TheFamilyMan's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcRich, The issue I had was with the reference cooler, not with the watercooler. My P3D temps are in the high 30's to low 40's when using a 4K monitor with the card OC'd 200MHz. I would recommend this to anyone with a reference cooler. There is simply no comparison. One of the best decisions I've made for my system.

SirStiggie replied to TheFamilyMan's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcThe nVidia reference cooler really isn't very efficient, especially when overclocking the card.

gtx 980 ti launches
SirStiggie replied to TheFamilyMan's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcJohn, It can be purchased separately. See http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=400-HY-0996-B1 EVGA can't seem to keep them in-stock though. I've been spamming the F5 key on their site for a little over a week before I managed to grab one. It is worth it though.

gtx 980 ti launches
SirStiggie replied to TheFamilyMan's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcOne of the biggest challenges I've had with my Ti is the temperature when its under load. It would regularly reach 83 degrees and start throttling, sometimes to under 1GHz. That issue was resolved today with the installation of the EVGA Hybrid watercooling kit. It's an AIO kit that cools the GPU with water while retaining the air cooler for the RAM and VRM: So far, my synthetic benchmarks have failed to reach greater than 48 deg C at 4k and my test games at that resolution have not raised temps above 55 deg c. This is with a 200MHz overclock on the card. It is a very impressive kit. I'll report back on its performance with P3D.

gtx 980 ti launches
SirStiggie replied to TheFamilyMan's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcI've been using my 980 Ti for two weeks now as a replacement for my two EVGA 980's with the ACX cooler and I'm very impressed. I've been able to use the same settings with the Ti that I had with the two 980's in SLI and while the maximum FPS is not as high, the other performance metrics are pretty much the same. It is just as smooth and is not affected when ASN throws a lot of clouds at it as my single 980. I do plan to get back into SLI soon with another Ti but that is more for the other games I play than for P3D. I will say that at 4k, this single card is much more impressive than my 980's in SLI were. The only downside to the card I got is the cooler as I got the EVGA SuperClocked with the reference cooler which, frankly, is quite disappointing. I am currently waiting on EVGA to get their hybrid cooler in-stock so I can resolve this problem, Great card, especially if you're using 4K. If you're not doing 4K, this card really isn't necessary as I've never seen P3D use more than 2.3k of VRAM.

Nvidia 352.86 ...!
This is exactly what I was getting. Upgrading to 353.06 eliminated that issue on my system.

gtx 980 ti launches
SirStiggie replied to TheFamilyMan's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcFurther testing show that while a single Ti is definitely better than a single 980, in some scenarios, the 980's in SLI perform better such as very heavy cloud cover with volumetric fog turned on. I found that while FPS was only slightly lower with the Ti, the experience was not as smooth as with the SLI configuration. Pretty much, SLI showed little to no loss in smoothness when moving in and out of heavy cloud cover while the single Ti did. The Ti is not nearly as bad as a single 970 or 980 but you do see a difference. Other than that and the temperature issue, I'm pretty happy with the Ti.

gtx 980 ti launches
SirStiggie replied to TheFamilyMan's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcIt is surprising to me as well. Either the driver / p3d combo hasn't really been optimized (most likely cause) or the 980 Ti is really better than the 980.

gtx 980 ti launches
SirStiggie replied to TheFamilyMan's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcJust installed the Ti and I'm a little surprised that the performance in P3D is pretty much the same as when I had the 980's in SLI. I did my usual test flight (Orbx PNW, KHQM to KSEA with heavy cloud cover from Actice Sky) and while the FPS was slightly less, the overall experience appeared to be smoother. I also did not take a hit due to the clouds that I was expecting which was surprising. Early days yet though.... My only complaint is the temperature the card runs at. The reference cooler really isn't that good. I understand the Titan X's water block will fit this card so once EVGA confirms that, I'll start order parts to build the loop.

gtx 980 ti launches
SirStiggie replied to TheFamilyMan's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcI hope so. I'm lucky I was able to get both my current 980 SC's sold and I actually came out ahead on the sale. I wish it came with a back plate but no matter, it'll be water-cooled in a couple of months and hopefully EVGA will release a back plate for it soon. Now I need to resist buying a second Ti for SLI.........

gtx 980 ti launches
SirStiggie replied to TheFamilyMan's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcAfter three days of trying to order a Ti, I just snagged an EVGA Superclocked Ti on NewEgg. If anyone wants to order before they run out again, now's the time.

SirStiggie replied to TheFamilyMan's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcIs US$430 + shipping a good price to sell my EVGA 980 SC's with backplates for on EvilBay?

SirStiggie replied to TheFamilyMan's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcI believe EVGA also as their own branded waterblocks for their cards which, I think, are also made by EK.
