July 13, 201510 yr I am considering a new build for FSX. My question is: Is the GTX 980TI worth the extra $250, as compared to the GTX 980 when it comes to FSX? Since FSX is mainly CPU dependent do I really need the extras of the "TI"? Your opinions please Pete S. July 13, 201510 yr Pete, In watching the responses to your question, I would like to see those responses reference the CPU speed relative to if or not the difference in the video speed. i.e what baseline CPU speed would be needed in order to realize the improvement in video speed?. July 13, 201510 yr I would say: Waste of money for FSX. Overclocked 4790K and GTX 980 should be a great combination, if installed on a quality motherboard with fast RAM. Bert
July 13, 201510 yr As a side note you may want to consider DX10 steves fixer with a card like the 980ti as it supposedly transfers the load according to mutleys hanger review "the rendering pipeline is no longer shared by the CPU (the GPU does it all) I would therefore suggest that you ideally need to have a high-end graphics card" ZORAN
July 13, 201510 yr Overclocked 4790K and GTX 980 should be a great combination, if installed on a quality motherboard with fast RAM. Working nicely for me in FSX:Steam Edition. I did have to go to an internal soundcard to resolve sound stutters caused by PCI-E overload, but that's more about DPC latency in FSX than the performance of the graphics card. With the soundcard in place, everything's smooth as silk. Alan Ampolsk"Ah, Paula, they are firing at me!"-- Saint-Exupery
July 13, 201510 yr My FSX Steam setup consists of [email protected] (on air), GTX 970, 16GB of ram @1600 and get about 16-20FPS in airports area with World of AI traffic (all airlines added) set at 50% and 40% for GA. In flight it can reach 100FPS at times even though I have plenty of add ons installed including 6 layers of soft clouds, REX 4, REX contrails and ASN. I use dual monitor setup (27" and 23") FSX running in windowed mode + browser, browser FSX helpers for VA i fly, Plan-G and some other stuff. Not sure what to do about the airport frame drop but I'm generally content with how it runs. In my opinion GPU is not really that important because before the 970 I had a 770 and to be honest I really didn't notice much difference IF any. Properly setup inspector can make wonders for nVidia. B) ..according to NickN who I tend to listen to, for a 4.0 GHz CPU, a 970 is perfectly adequate in FSX. Personally, I run a 770 and am pretty happy. Recommendation for a 4.5 GHz CPU, is to spend the money and get the 980 -_- Bert
July 13, 201510 yr Anything over a GTX680 will eat up FSX. It's CPU horsepower that makes the difference. (If you can see it that is. ) The World is divided into two groups. Those who say "Give me a link" and those that provide the link. WWG1WGA
July 13, 201510 yr I've been through a 970, 980, 980's in SLI, and now a Ti and I am quite happy with the Ti especially after it was watercooled. FSX performed the same with all of them. P3D is a different matter. I also play other games as well which is why I went with the Ti. For FSX only, the Ti is a waste of money, so is a 980 and possibly, a 970. You will get better performance for FSX by getting a stable overclock on the 4790k with decent RAM and a GTX 960. I played FSX for a few weeks on the integrated Intel GPU and had very good performance, especially after I got my CPU stable at 4.8GHz. If you're looking at P3D or any other game though, the Ti is worth the money over the 980. July 14, 201510 yr I have to LOL when I read a topic like this and then read other threads that complain about a 40-something-dollar price for a new airplane release! July 14, 201510 yr I need a bit of advise. I have a i7-920 at 4.0 ghz, and gtx 660. Get around 20 fps with pmdg 777 and complex scenery. I want to upgrade, but want to do in phases and not throw away anything as I upgrade. Should I get a 970 or 980 now, will I see any improvement with my current setup, before I go the whole mobo, CPU, ram ? July 14, 201510 yr Author My present system consists of: Intel I7 - 3770k running at 3.50 Asus P8z77-V Pro nVidia GTX 570 16GB GSkill Ripjaws X DDR3 1600 CL9. FSX runs fairly well, but gets overloaded and stutters depending on what I'm running in FSX. I'm ready to upgrade to a 4790K, GTX 980 or 980 Ti and an Asus MB (haven't settled on which one yet. I'll probably upgrade to GSkill 2133 or 2400 memory and water cooling to o'clock the CPU to 4.8 The Boss is ok with this, bless her heart! July 14, 201510 yr 3960x, 980. FSX doesn't stutter. Incredibly smooth. There are a few situations where the fps are slowed (below 30), but most are in the upper 40's to 60's (payware airplanes & Orbx) , and on up to the 200's.

The 3960x is way overpriced and from what I was able to gather has no real advantage over the 4790k Overclocked, to justify the price tag, at least not in FSX!
