New to FSX - FPS/Tweaking Help

Featured Replies

Hi All

I've just switched over to FSX from FS9 and am pleased that I can at least run the software at a reasonable level on my rig, i.e. it doesn't just stutter and die!

I've installed all of my UK2000 scenery which I can tell has hit the FPS.

The FPS are currently not what I would like so I'm looking for a little help from those more in the know about these things!

Basically to test things I've been just doing a departure from the UK2000 EGGD in the default A321 (don't want to spend money on payware aircraft until I'm happy that I'm going to be able to run it satisfactorily!)

I was surprised that I'm getting 20-25FPS in spot, panning around the aircraft, but dropping dramatically in the (2D) cockpit - is that normal? It was going below 10FPS in the cockpit at times! Other times 15-20.

All with fair weather in daytime.

I was hoping someone might be able to help me tweak my settings to get a balance between performance and visuals.

I've posted my in game and nvidia Inspector settings, as well as my fsx.cfg below if anyone can help me tweak this baby I will be very grateful :)

Thanks!

Not that I'm an expert in this, but I'd say try to reduce your scenery settings a bit. They are actually extremely high. Also try to turn down airline traffic. That can also have an impact on FPS.

You need to setup your computer using Word Not Allowed's Setup Guide pinned to the top of this section.

Dave

(I've been waiting to say that!)

Hi Dave

I did that, that's how I got this far :)

I guess it's mostly just a case of dropping sliders bit by bit until I get to an acceptable frame rate!

Cheers

What are your PC specs?

Exactly, my guide has been made for usage with little or no AI. It is because I am using none.

Your AI settings on the other hand are very high, even for fast computers. You must find a middle ground for yourself when using such high AI, must compensate elsewhere.

Your specs also aren't very high, compare your 2.8Ghz vs many people running close to 5Ghz. So, for your specs, you must lower more - especially AI, a bit on the scenery, remove aircraft shadows, possibly try running water 1.x without BP=0 or with the RT...

Thanks Word Not Allowed! Will try what you suggest!

Yes I'm sadly aware that my hardware is in need of a refresh. Out of interest, when the time comes, which aspect would produce the best benefit to upgrade? CPU, RAM or gfx?

I'm thinking of getting some photoreal scenery...that being the case I presume I would want to turn autogen off which would also help the fps?

Also considering Rex, if it will not hit the fps badly??

which aspect would produce the best benefit to upgrade? CPU, RAM or gfx?

All, starting with the CPU. Fast CPU + fast RAM + good GPU is a must.

Try disabling 2x Transparency SuperSampling in inspector - trust me - that can kill your frames. Leave everything else the way it is.

Transparency SS is not that heavy, not for GTX460 that is.

I just want him to try it - I have a GTX680 and it gives me problems.

I have disabled the supersampling and dropped a few sliders and have slightly better FPS as a result. The UK2000 scenery does seem to be a big hitter, it's much better FPS at default airports (to be expected)

Still surprised that I get better FPS panning around in spot than in a 2D cockpit, is that normal?

Sadly, with a 2.8 GHz CPU you will not get great results.

Pick some decent cooling system and overclock the i5 as much as you can, you should notice a big improvement there.

Yes, that was pretty much expected, you are always going to get couple of FPS. What you are looking is a major boost - you must find what gives you like 60fps in default scenery, then add UK2000 and you should be OK. Rough estimate though. Works like that here.
