Flying over the North / South Poles..

Featured Replies

Can this be done in X-Plane10?

I tried, but didn't have the time to continue flying and the aircraft was placed at an aerodrome that was still far from the North Pole, but, as I was approaching I believe I saw a rather unplausible piramid-like shape (?)

Also, apparently there is no ice cover there.

Comments / suggestions welcome :-)

And no suggestion like: what the &u$k do you want to get your airplane there ?! please... If I had the 777 it would be great to try a polar route, but I'm affraid of what I may find there... :-/

I don't believe it's possible - X-Plane only covers to 74 degrees north and 64 degrees south. Polar flight is not in the cards. Given the lack of seasonal textures, you'll also see no snow and ice up there - Alaska is a beatiful perma-green!

(*This scenery limitation is also observed when you install X-Plane from the DVD's - there aren't any "checkboxes" for the polar regions to install)

I think he's not talking about scenery, but about the physics model.

Antarctica is not a simple place to build. The SRTM elevation data is available but the publicly available shoreline data is very poor. GSHHS polygon data is not great, but it is at least the most complete and gives your a good starting point -- however there is still a lot of hand editing involved.

Here is an example of what I've done so far around Anverse Island where Palmer Station is located.

As for what happens when you fly near the poles. Well, from the program's view a singularity exists at the poles, where you essentially have 180 tiles converging on a single point in space. If you fly to this point X-Plane will crash. However you should be ok if you fly around this point.
