Big thanks out to you Paul (and others who have done the testing and put it all togeather) for your pinned DX10 "How To" and required files in an easy to follow step by step guide.

I am another happy DX10 convert, with all that works working.

The biggest change for me is to have all sliders right, with only minimal texture lag, but only in very heavy built up areas, with detailed aircraft (PMDG) not a problem though, as I mostly fly low and slow with Orbx.

The only issue I have with 10 over 9, is slightly better AA with 9. Far outweighed by smoooooooooooth @ a constant 30FPS

:drinks: Cheers, Gav! Well done! It's sure nice to open the first post of the day and hear/see another success story. :clapping: ...but the hero is not me, Gav, and never has been. I'm just a messenger, nothing more.

Steve is the man, all the way. He may think all of this as just a small challenge - "something to do to pass the time", but the fact that he has taken the time and dedication to look into the FSX shaders is most admirable. Single-handedly he has changed FSX, and has given us a fresh look at our hobby: even being part of this forum in the way we all are - is a new and great experience, and that's thanks to folks just like you.

All the Best,

Well, I may be a new convert, also...Had to try this after seeing the "how-to" doc (thanks to all involved). It's remarkable overall; I love the movement of shadows across the panel of my PMFG J4100 during a turn above the clouds!

I do have some minor runway lighting issues and the taxiway color issue at dawn and dusk, but I consider these somewhat minor. The bigger issue for me is the ocean water lightening issue...can't seem to darken the water to my liking, having tried FSWClite with various color options from AS2012 and REX. Still hunting for an acceptable solution...if anyone has a suggestion, I'll try it with thanks.

Hi Wayne! Welcome to the club!

There is a possible answer for you: Steve did some work a few weeks back, identifying the changes that could possibly be made to darken the water, and it's published on his blog site, but not into the patch yet, and may not be going to because of complexity. However - that doesn't mean we can't try his posted figures!

If you can wait for an hour or so I will publish it in a word doc, back here, or will add it into the main 'How-To' doc.

Here it is, Wayne:-

If you have any experience with the FSX-DX9 version of the WaterConstants.xml file, you will immediately see a strong similarity between the two files.

Don't forget to delete the shader cache file before you start FSX after making any changes to any of the ShadersHLSL files.

Open question: for folks having read and used this doc - assuming success - should it be incorporated into the pinned "How-To" doc. What do you think?

Thanks

pj

Thanks, Paul, and I'll give this a try this evening (Boston time).

UPDATE: One quick test was encouraging, and I'll try more locations later this evening.

Hi Paul,

just made a first test with the water color fix by night and day. The water colors are looking fine and well balanced. IMHO the guideline for this fix should be included into the "how-to" doc too.

Wulf

That's exactly what I was looking for, Wulf! - Thank you Sir! I'm glad you were able to plow through the verbage without any problem - editing a C# (I think) script is not something most users are "comfortable" with! I'll see how best to squeeze it in - perhaps making it a straight file replacement.

On a similar note - Carl (ctiger) posted his ATI gpu settings here, today, helping a new DX10'er, so it might be a good time to start an ATI configuration settings, too.

Hi Paul,

the last correction step to completly delete existing "shaders10" folder in ...Appdata/Local/Microsoft/FSX should be clearly highlighted as "step 3".

Good idea to provide new straight file(s).

I hope that one day there will be only one DX10 shader patch including all partial fixes, e.g. patch 3.1, rain fix, water color fix and so on to make it attractive for those who are not so familiar with computing. Today you/we are still in the phase of experimenting and collecting. My 2 cents.

Wulf

Done! Again - thank you for this input! The biggest issue I had, Wulf - was keeping it all on one page while at the same time keeping it as readable and logical as possible!

Yes - I think Steve will do this. The problem with water color is that it's subjective: one person may say the color is fine, another says it's too light, and yet another wants it darker.... so the challenge is - :how does one do that in a patch? I can certainly bundle it, but we have to remember - this is Stevejp's Patch: it is not mine, and he will certainly - correctly - think I am treading into his territory - and that's the last thing I want to happen.
