November 1, 201213 yr Hi I have come to a point where I have to uninstall FS9 as I have problems with it crashing. I have been using RC4 for some months now - what is the procedure, do I uninstall RC4 as well and then reinstall once FS9 is loaded again, or can I just leave it and back up sime files instead? I am not reformatting the HD or anything like that. Many thanks Rich
November 1, 201213 yr RC4 = Radar Contact 4! Do not use it, but have you tried to identify what the cause of the FS9 crashes are? There are many on here that use FS9 and reinstall for a number of different reasons. The most common will be when changing their computer or upgrading the current one. Because of the time that FS9 has been around, it would probably be best to get to the bottom of the problem, especially if you have a lot of add-ons (payware or freeware). Always back up everything when reinstalling. You can even leave on your present FS9 installation (change the name of the .exe so that when starting up FS9 it is the lastest installation that you have). Once you have the basic installation up and running and satisfied with it, you can then start to move accross files from the folders of the old installation, but for the add-ons where you have discs or keys, then best to do them as fresh installations. Do this systematically and start up the new installation of FS9 periodically, after each installation, to ensure that it is running smoothly. Keep doing this until you have the setup you want. Finally, leave off RC4 until you are really satisfied that FS9 is not crashing. Do a fresh install of RC4, to be sure that you have limited the possibility of a possible corrupted installation. Trust this will help you on your way. November 1, 201213 yr Author Yes I have tried to identify the cause but without success. I have been using FS9 without any problems for over 2 years now. I have many many add-ons and never had a problem with any of them. I also had an external HD which mirrored my PC HD, so in the event of a problem I could just reinstall. Sod's law however, when I went to try this option the external HD had become corrupted, hence no good!! I have reinstalled several times in the past, so am well aware of all files to back up and move across etc. I also have all my payware scenery installation files in one folder and a list of all the keys/registreation codes, so am well prepared. RC4 is a different kettle of fish though, as this sits outside of FS9 but interacts with it, hence why I was asking. The cause of my FS9 crashing is that I accidentally removed a default scenery (the SYDNEY folder). I reinstalled it but FS9 will now never load a flight - gets as far as 77% "installing weather" and then just stops. Have tried a restore, replacing the scenery.cfg file with a previous one, also tried FlightSim Manager, but nothing has worked.
November 1, 201213 yr I am sure that there are many in the real world that would like to remove Sydney and let it float down to the Antartic! From what I recall, the problem is the same when you take out a default aircraft, only to find that add-on aircraft that you have selected may be using a file from that removed default aircraft, especially from the panel! Have you tried starting at an airport/airfield that is not in the same scenery as that of Australia, where you have no intentions to fly there also. I expect someone may well try to recreate your scenario or, possibly, have come across the same problem with the removal of a default scenery file/folder, but managed to restore it successfully. November 1, 201213 yr Author Hi Sauviat I have tried starting from everywhere, always the same result. Do Microsoft still have support for this and hence is it worth asking them? I asked on another forum about this problem and was just advised best to reinstall FS9. Rich
November 1, 201213 yr It is my understanding that MS do not and have not supported FS9 for a very long time now. Suffice to say that I think FSX is now not being supported by MS or at least that is about to stop. The Avsim forum is about the best medium for such support, as it is rich with different members' hands-on experiences. November 1, 201213 yr It is not necessary to remove and reinstall RC4. If you do move it to a reformatted HD then you will have to reregister it to get a new key. If FS is moved to a new location remember to reset the paths in RC. FSUIPC should be updated. Links at the forum top. RC has no communication with FS until you press the START key and you can not do that until you have a flight loaded and running in FS. Just start FS9 and load your flight with no other add-ons running. Use a default aircraft and airport. If you still get a crash then try a different airport in another part of the world. Turn ai down to 0 to eliminate a corrupt ai model. For FS9 the hidden file called FS9.cfg is in your folder similar to mine: "C:\Documents and Settings\Ron Ginsberg\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9\FS9.cfg" You'll need to set Explorer to show hidden files. Rename FS9.cfg to FS9.hld. When you start FS9 it will create a new default FS9.cfg. Load a flight that causes a crash. If it still does you can put back the original FS9.cfg. If your crash occurs in a specific area and also time of day you probably have a bad scenery with a bad texture or bad afcad type file. If it only happens with ai running then it relates to a defective ai model. You can prevent add-on scenery from being loaded by just deactivating it, not removing it, in the scenery library. Don't deactivate the default libraries. When you start FS9 it will rebuild the scenery index for each change in the scenery library settings.
