November 15, 201213 yr We're getting into a new area with this cache. If you haven't flown around the Tok area, then take some time to do a little sightseeing. I'm going to suggest that if you want to do a little flying before getting the cache, then you start a Nome or Brevige Mission. If you start at the CGS, you'll be very close to the cache. Enjoy. November 15, 201213 yr Author I collected this cache without any trouble. And then landed back at the CGS. Then since I had just a short flight to get the cache, I decided to fly a bit more and headed across the water to Brevige Mission. Wish I had started from here. On the way to Brevige Mission: I enjoyed the scenery along the way. Thought it was really neat how not all of the terrain was snow covered and stark white. I flew around Brevige Mission and decided to land. And low and behold, I received my 500 landings award. All in all, a fun cache collection and flight. Thank you. November 15, 201213 yr Congratulations on the old 500th, Rick. That's a milestone for sure. Love the pictures, great flight. I am somewhat confused, though. There is a CGS at Tok but that is far inland, nowhere near here. This is the Port Clarence Loran that was demolished a few years ago.. http://forum.avsim.n...-time-religion/ Best regards. November 16, 201213 yr Author Good catch Luis. I didn't pay a lot of attention to the location and you're absolutely correct. This is nowhere near Tok. Wonder what MS was thinking? And I had completely forgotten about your post with the pics. I remembered it when I checked out the link. Thanks. By the way, I don't think it's you that's confused. I think the Flight team was. Kind of neat to still have the antenna though. Thank you. November 16, 201213 yr There's an area a little east of Tok, a clearing in the woods with four radio towers, that looks like the "crop circle" the game's hint refers to. It would make a cool place for a cache. (I've never been able to figure out how to post pictures here.) - Peter C http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bob_and_Ray_Show
November 22, 201213 yr Nice post and pictures guys! Brings back memories, as I was the Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard Loran Station at Port Clarence, way back in 1981-1982. We had 32 guys to keep the Loran signal on the air, broadcasting from our 1350' tower, and maintaining the airport, including keeping snow off the runway. Saw a lot of C-130's and bush planes come and go. The tower and station are indeed, gone, when we finally got out of the Loran business in Alaska a few years back. Guess everybody is flying their waypoints up there with GPS now... Chris Conklin Honolulu
November 22, 201213 yr Was that you, Chris? Good to see you weigh in on this post, always good to have first-hand information. I notice you are now in a more sunny clime. What a change from Alaska! Best regards, Luis Hot, humid Caribbean paradise!
