Airport lights - Visible from how far?

Got a spot'a'bovva ear me ol china's....

So I like to go from Biggin hill to Heathrow, short 15 minute trip across London, great for testing out demanding scenery/airports, but I'm finding that Heathrow at night, is practically "Lights out, nobody home" until I get within just a few miles from the airport.. The runways lights don't start showing until really close... I haven't re-installed (I'm on my 3rd re-install now lol) any pay-ware airports yet... Only G.E.X and U.T.X so far. Everything else is stock FSX..

Tried the U.T.X lights at night, rubbish!

So, when flying at night, how close should you need to be, so actually see the bloomin runway?

Do I need to land, taxi to the tower, get out and go switch the lights on myself, then TOGO! :LMAO:

Crikey blimey gov'nor, what a right 2'n'8...

Good question. I wonder if this can be increased by upping the LOD_Radius

Anthony Cacciatore

The actual runway lights at night are usually at about 30% luminosity and so you don't pick them up until between 5 and 10 miles from the airfield. What you may pick up sooner is the high intensity approach lighting and strobe but the intensity depends on the weather conditions. What you are most likely to pick up early is the aerodrome beacon. When flying into an airfield in a built up area at night, the airport will usually be darker then the surroundings. The PAPI intensity is also reduced at night.

Hiya...

I tried increasing the LOD radius to 25 but that didn't work, just took ages to load, then knocked my FPS down to 20+ (Still smooth) instead of 50+ :(

I can see the airport itself, the buildings in the middle of the 2 runways, but the runways are invisible at night... No beacons, no strobes, no aerodrome beacon, nothing at all. Heck if I hadn't flown there before, I wouldn't know it was Heathrow except for the blue lit up buildings in the distance on a clear night with visibility unlimited..

I would have thought I should be able to see something at least.. Not even the PAPI lights are visible until the same runway lighting becomes visible.
