November 22, 201213 yr Giant Redwoods are amazing: Seen pictures of that tree with the road through it before, and wondered what kind of idiot, seeing a magnificent tree like that, would decide that what it needed is a tunnel cut right through the heartwood. It's a wonder it survived. It's like that other idiot who found what turned out to be the world's oldest bristlecone pine, and cut it down so he could count the rings (and presumably show off to his chums back at the Royal Society or whatever that he'd found the oldest living thing in existence). Fortunately we tend to have a little more respect these days.
