How does XPlane run under Ubuntu and what is the best machine to use? This is one heck of an alternative that I haven't thought much about. I would imagine XPlane runs better in the Linux environment than it does in Windows.

Yes, with a good proprietary Nvidia driver it's the best you can get. Tests have been made in this topic.
