Experienced Regional ERJ Drivers ?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Anyone out there have some experience with the Feelthere ERJ-135/145? Been having some trouble figuring out how to a "Direct To" via the FMC without interrupting my existing flight plan... The ERJ-170/190 - it's pretty easy but I'm having all kinds of issues with ERJ-135/145... I'm almost always using RC4 and typically I get the proceed direct to xxx after passing xxx feet... I've tried the "Direct To" key on the FMC and it displays "Direct To" near the top left LSK... It seems that when I try to enter something there it doesn't work right - and - while trying to get it to work it sometimes crashes FS9 to desktop after a long freeze... Other times I seem to lose my planned flight plan... Can anyone walk me through the steps ?

Regards,

Scott

Can you not use the same way that I told you before? Or is the FMC completely different?

Use the appropriate LSK to take the desired "Direct to" waypoint down into the scratchpad, the use LSK1L to put it in the first waypoint position, (active waypoint position), then execute. It shouldn't affect the following route waypoints.

You can also use that way to cut out the odd waypoint if given a minor route change.

Hi Colin,

Thanks - I'll give that a try... I fly a couple different planes and I guess I forgot I asked this before... Maybe i should stick to my forte and fly GA... My apologies...

I wound up crashing two flights to the desktop last night trying to get the "Direct To" working... Not sure which button it was - but - the sim would freeze for a few minutes - then crash...

Scott

If you have a DIRECT TO button, if the other method doesn't work, try;

Take the desired waypoint into the scratchpad, press DIRECT TO and if it brings up boxes for an entry, use the LSK next to the boxes to put the waypoint there. You should then be able to execute it and continue on the programmed route. If it doesn't bring up boxes for an entry it must be something peculiar to that type of FMC.

By GA, do you mean those little clockwork toys?

There are (I think) 3 ways of doing this in the ERJ, only the first of which involves the DIR key...

1. To route direct to a waypoint already in the flightplan, press DIR, then the LSK next to that waypoint (using the NEXT key if it's on a later page of the plan). Don't try to enter the name of the waypoint again. That may well be what causes the CTD - there are a few other quirks of the ERJ FMC that seem to do that.

2. Alternatively and more simply / crudely, delete all intermediate waypoints between current position and the one you want to route directly to (by pressing DEL then the left LSK next to each one). May well leave you off course, of course.

3. To route direct to a waypoint not in the flightplan, don't press DIR. Type the waypoint name in the scratchpad, then left LSK2, effectively inserting it as the next waypoint. You may then need to delete intermediate waypoints from the original flightplan (as in 2 above).

So in short, DIR only works with existing waypoints, and only then by selecting them from the flightplan itself.

It's not a real plane unless it has a propellor on the front...

You're almost right, but these days it's called a FAN, ( a turbofan).

Morn'n Folks,

OK - for the life of me I can't seem to get this to work... On my last flight - KEYW to KTPA - was given a hold at RSW after I had already passed it - from RC4 due to traffic... I saved the flight at that point and I can't seem to get any of the suggestions to work... First I went into the "DIRECT" page and just selected the LSK adjacent to RSW... All it did was take me back to the "ACTIVE FLIGHT PLAN" page... I then tried to "INSERT" RSW between RSW and KTPA - which resulted in an "INVALID DIRECT TO"... I can insert an RSW after KTPA - but - obviously - that's no good... If I try to "INSERT" RSW on the "DIRECT" page using the top right LSK - it blows away my flight plan... If I simply fly my preplanned route - everything seems to work... I need to figure out - how to fly DIRECT to a point and then perform a HOLD... After the hold - I need to get back on my flight plan... I've got this to work with the newer FeelThere ERJ170/190 FMS - I just can't seem to get this one to do what I need... The manual describes all kinds of holds - I just can't get them to work... I see the "PATTERN" and "INTERCEPT" on the "DIRECT" page as well - I can't seem to figure these out as well... Any help appreciated... Arrgh...

Do you have a Heading Select function. If so, use that to turn back to RSW until you can get it back in the FMC as the active waypoint. If RSW won't go into the LSK1L for direct, then try INTERCEPT and put the return track in, eg. 157°.

It must be possible to navigate without LNAV or even the FMC by using some form of Heading Select or even Level Change instead of VNAV. If all else fails, then fly the a/c manually to go in the right direction and return to automatics once you've sorted it out.

First rule. FLY the airplane, don't let it fly you.

I don't think you can insert RSW between RSW and TPA as you said. You should be able to put it on top of the RSW entry as if replacing it.

Using your example above, try LSK1L to take RSW down into the scratchpad on then put it back with LSK1L and execute if necessary.

Hi Colin,

Yeah - I had switched to NAV and tuned the VOR... Unfortunately - I hit the wrong button on the FMC while attempting to figure it out and flight sim crashed... Using RC4 - there was no way to save the RC4 setup so this flight was trashed... Luckily - I saved a point before the crash so at least I can work on getting this sorted out... Thanks for always being there with your wealth of knowledge... I'll give that a try... So many folks had given this plane great reviews - one of the major reason I purchased it - after all these ears I can't imagine I'm the first person having trouble doing this stuff...

Hi Colin,

Yeah - tried that too - LOL - how can they make such a simple task so hard ?

This is what I get - when I tried what you recommended - inserting RSW in the RSW position - which seems as if it should work... It erases my programmed flight plan and I'm starting from scratch...

The DIRECT page I can't get to work at all - including the PATTERN and INTERCEPT menus on the bottom...

Is that the page brought up by the DIR or NAV button? What is on Page 2/2? Try the NEXT or PREV buttons to change pages.

It looks a rather basic FMC/ CDU compared to the early Boeing systems I was used to. Do you not get any form of manual or tutorial flight with the ERJ?

Do the NAV or PROG(ress) pages bring up the sequence of waypoints? And do you have a scratchpad under the bottom LSKs, ie under the PATTERN / INTERCEPT entries which you can bring waypoints down into so that you can change their positions up/down by moving them with the different LSKs?

Hi Colin,

Just curious - what do you spend your time flying in MSFS ??? Just the PMDG birds in FSX ??? Just curious what real airline pilots prefer...

It did come with a manual and I have read it - it just included a basic "I'm flying from point A to point B"... I can get that part to work... It didn't discuss any inflight changes that routinely pop up... I'll check again just to be sure...

Here is the layout...
