I am currently a user of ASE and use it for both FSX and FS9. I would like to upgrade to AS2012 and need two know if the two can coexist together since I would still be using ASE for my FS9 installation. I have ASE set up on a separate laptop and networked to my sim desktop. AS2012 would be set up on the same laptop. I'm really more worried about the licensing than I am the actual operation since I would never be running both at the same time.

Yes, they coexist happily - I have ASV6.5, ASE, and AS2012 on the same system with no conflicts noted.
