December 25, 201213 yr Does anyone know for certain if the landing behavior of the NGX different if crash detection is on or off? For example bounces, are they the same? I know what would have been a crash will just bounce if I descend REALLY fast, but what about normal bounces and other problematic landings is there any difference in how the NGX will behave in response to that setting? I've been toying with the idea of turning on crash detection again. I don't like ruining my taxi to the runway by hitting cones and things in the gates/parking areas though. Ideally I would like to turn it on from in-flight, but there is no option to alter realism once in the air so I guess it has to just be on or off.. Has anyone found an acceptable medium by turning it on and adjusting the crash tolerance? At full crash tolerance, a really firm landing is a full crash.. Also has anyone found a way around the occasional hidden objects or do you just reload the flight from the auto-save? I suppose I could increase the frequency of auto-saves to make sure I get that last bit of pre-flight saved before I taxi. I'm wondering how others handle this?
December 26, 201213 yr Commercial Member Crash tolerance is incredibly unrealistic and not even worth turning on. Ever. Unless you want to make the simulation feel more like a game. You know...akin to Call of Duty, where you can shoot someone in the face and they walk away, but if they get stabbed, they're immediately dead. Kyle Rodgers
December 26, 201213 yr I'm wondering how others handle this? I turn off crash detection. I've got a pretty good idea when I've crashed, and I don't feel like having the flight reset on me. Microsoft Flight had a better system, where if you crashed (possibly by clipping a tree on a bush landing) it would play a video of what happened afterwards, then put you back at 1000 feet at normal airspeed with throttles and trim set for cruise. You can see what kind of tolerance the landing gear have by looking at the "contacts" section of the aircraft config file. Seems like most of them allow up to 1600 feet per minute. If the fields for that section aren't marked, you can find them in most other aircraft config files. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! December 26, 201213 yr Author Kyle - your posts always make me chuckle. Hook - Thanks I didn't know about that section. The only thing I want is to make me keep my landings "good", and to go around if it's not. It's hard to create the slight fear we get in real life flying, but if there is some consequence to a bad landing I thought it might help. But I don't want it to only happen when I'm stabbed, a gun should work too. Maybe I just have to accept FSX is not up to scratch on crash detection in the way that other sims are.
December 27, 201213 yr Commercial Member Kyle - your posts always make me chuckle. I'm glad. I'm sure some would have seen that post as gruff or mean. I turned detection off and rely a lot more on the sound of things. You can really hear it when you smack the plane into the ground. Additionally, the NGX does have some consequence-based failures in there. If I recall correctly, if you smack the nose gear in a particular way, you can mess it up pretty good. You could also take a look at the MAINT pages to see if you've messed anything up as well. Kyle Rodgers
