December 28, 201213 yr just got fs9 yesterday; i don't understand 'trim'; lesson says ' attitude, power, and trim' ; i'm using the keyboard/mouse; thanks i've been hitting numpad-5 to stabilize things ; thanks numpad 7 and 9 trim up and down... trim helps stabilize the aircraft at any given power setting or attitude. In general, the faster you go the more the a/c wants to climb so you trim to maintain altitude with no control input; the opposite trim is needed as you slow. numpad 5 simply centers the control inputs. December 28, 201213 yr Time for a flight Joystick, first of all!... ...! Trim?.....Flight Sim Lessons... Paul...FS 2004...FS Nav... :Bug: ...!
December 28, 201213 yr 'm using the keyboard/mouse As Fozzer said,"Time for a flight Joystick, first of all!" If it is at all possible or as soon as it is possible. It will definitely make a world of difference. Once you experience having to hold the joystick pushed forward while under power to keep from climbing or pulling back while under reduced power to avoid loss of altitude you will get a much better understanding of what trim is and does. The short of it is the trim function does the pushing or pulling for you under certain conditions - power, aircraft attitude and pilot intentions as in fly a chosen altitude or climb or descend. The same principle as a real aircraft or as close as Microsoft could come to it. The basic method is that each control surface, aileron, elevator and rudder have smaller control surfaces built into them. By adjusting these manually for a given set of conditions a pilot is able to fly a desired flight path with very little input from the yoke / stick and rudder. In the real world that makes flying much, much less tiresome. I hope this helps some with the basics. Welcome to FS9 and to AVSIM Best regards, Mel
