Still unclear about this whole DCS thing

Featured Replies

So I read multiple explanations on what DCS actually is, but I'm still unclear about all these modules. So I looked on the DCS website and it said that they sell DCS: A-10C Warthog, however, DCS: World is free. But there is a A-10C Module for DCS: World as well? Because as far as I have seen, I have seen people actually using separate DCS products such as Flaming Cliffs and the A-10C without installing DCS: World. What is the purpose of DCS: World and why are there separate installations, but they claim there are also "Modules". Can anyone clarify this for me please? Thanks!

(Edit: Do you need DCS: World to be installed for Flaming Cliffs 2, 3 or the A-10C to work?)

A-10 and BS used to be stand alone products in the old days. Then they made this thing called DCS: World. So the way it goes now is that you download DCS World for free and install it. Then, when you purchase the A-10, BS, or P-51, and install those, these integrate themselves into DCS World. Think of DCS World like FSX and all the "modules" as just payware addons to it. So yes, in the current versions of A-10,BS2, or P-51, or Combined Arms it is a prerequisite for DCS to be installed first. I do not know for certainty if FC3 still retains standalone capability, but I'm guessing no.

Thank you so much! That really makes it much clearer. Just another question. So I heard that Flaming Cliffs doesn't have any "clickable" cockpits. I did hear, however, that IRIS Simulations will be coming with an F-15, F-14 and F-22 for DCS: World. Why does Flaming Cliffs not have clickable cockpits and does the A-10C and all other add-ons for DCS: World have a clickable cockpit? Thanks!

The p51d is a dream to fly, and, for me, the very first time I found a realistic prop (powerful prop) aircraft simulation, in all aspects pertaining to it :-)

Flying gliders since 1980

Flightsimming since 1992

DCS started off as the developer selling a consumer version of what they produced for military contracts. They had a contract for a KA-50 and A10 simulator which they sold slightly different versions to the public. Lucky for us we reap the benefits of these ultra realistic aircraft.

Lomac, FC1, FC2, FC3 is the legacy of their less realistic consumer stuff that has been around for a long time. They never had clickable cockpits and were not necessarily aimed at the same kind of person that would go for the a10 module although a lot of a10 guys started with lomac.

To add content to DCS world they ported the flaming cliffs aircraft over but did not overhaul them to add all the clickable cockpit stuff. The avionics in FC aircraft are more like 'game' mode then the a10, mustang and ka-50.

Thats why there is not the fidelity to those. The mustang started off as a employee project that got given the green light to finish up to the DCS standard of the a10 and ka-50. I dont know why the mustang. Could be because the company that publishes DCS owns a P51 as well as the largest flying collection of ww2 birds in europe .
