I went out and bought Corsair H80 liquid cooling and now the CPU idles at 29-31 and does not go above 60c, GPU idles at 38c and goes up to 62c under heavy load. Am I safe at these temps?................John

ps: Side panel is off

Yes, safe.

Most try not to go above 80 when overclocking, for me, I try to go a bit lower, so yes you are well in the safe zone.

Put your case side panel on. I presume you have a case with reasonable cooling?

Hi

I tried it with the case closed but the numbers go up and that bothers me. The case is an Antec Sonata and it was ment to pull air in the front and exhaust through the rear and so the airflow is not so efficient. I think I either need to modify it or replace it with something better. Any thoughts or recomendations???.........John

62C isn't even remotely close to dangerous levels. Maximum temperature for Ivy Bridge CPUs is 98C. If your chip reaches that point, it will protect itself by throttling back. You have nothing to worry about.

I'm running my 3700k at 4.9ghz. It needs 1.53 volts to be stable. My temps, with HT off, max at the mid or sometimes upper 80s in P3D (if I stress test it does get much hotter, but I only use it for flight sim). I've been running it that way now since July. Long term lifetime is not my goal, although I'd be unhappy if it crapped out in less than a year or so. I'll be the first to let everyone know if it does so that you don't repeat my mistake. By the way I'm using the Hyper EVO 212 in push pull, with additional two 120mm and two 200mm Coolermaster case fans in a HAF 912 case.

How high do the temps go up with side panel on? Are your cables routed neatly so they don't disrupt air flow?

I have a Lian Li P50 enclosure. It has two 140 fans on top, a 120 at the front, and a 120 at the rear. The two 140 fans, and the 120 front fan, are controlled by Asus Fan Expert. They pretty much never ramp up to full speed. Thus, system is quiet and cool. In FSX temps are in the 50's.

I don't believe any of the Sonata cases have acceptable front intakes, that's probably your issue. Sonata is designed for quietness rather than cooling.

If you think you would like a new case, it depends how much you wish to spend. We would need to know your budget.

Hi

Thanks for your input mate. I have been looking at a Thermaltake CHASER A11-1 case it looks like it would do the job just fine and would have lots of airflow and can accomodate enough fans to keep things well within limits and the cost with a $20 rebate will be $149 and that's less than I had thought it would be. If you think there might be a better deal on something better for less I would be happy to know about it. Thanks again for your help mate.....John
