Do I need an upgrade?

Featured Replies

My current specs are:

i7 920

9 GM RAM

Asus P6T mbb

WD 300GB Raptor

Nvidia 560 Ti

However when I fly into Heathrow using PMDG 737 and scenery add on the fps goes down to about 5-10. I am running with all the settings to high. I'm pretty sure my PC is good enough?

Dear God, (never thought I'd email you,but...)

I've been wanting to post this hint I just found last week. This may help you and others. Setting auto and boat traffic to ZERO improved my frame rates by 5-8 fps. This won't solve your problem, but might help, plus it gets the hint out to everyone it might benefit.

My system is inferior to yours (Pentium E5300 2.6 GHz, 4GB ram, GeF 560). My f/s is currently set for 24. I now get 14-18 f/s in VC, 24 in other views.

I read this weekend that PC (therefore, FS) gaming sales are small change to software companies, (compared to Playstation, etc.), these days, and that serious FS programs are unlikely in the future (we are a relatively small community). I will likely upgrade to a i7 3.4+ GHz, 8-12 GB RAM, GeF 620 system and live with FSX and PMDG for the next few years.

Check jetlinesystems website for some great FSX computer updating ideas.

Hi,

Have you tweaked your cfg. I can make a big difference.

If you haven't here is a link to Word Not Allowed's http://#####...-hardware-guide

Also go to the PMDG general forum and read Tabs's expanation of Nvidia inspector.

Hope that helps

Alex

Two things, GA: What speed is your proc running at? ... and can you attach a renamed copy of your fsx.cfg (as fsx_cfg.txt) here, along with a screenshot of your Inspector so we can see what might be a problem?

Thanks,

Its a standard 920 running at 2.67.

Attachments attached.

I meant the Inspector settings, GA - not the GPU Spec screen: can you post that?

Thanks.

"Do I need an upgrade"

If you have the money, GA - then upgrade. At this (2.67 GHz) speed it is good for FS9, but most people will not be 100% happy with FSX until their machine is running at 4 GHz or above. It will then be matching the performance available from that 560Ti, which is not a bad card at all. It's also true that many folks have overclocked their i7-920's to anywhere between 3.8 and 4.4 GHz. - but that is entirely dependent upon your skills and tech abilities.

Here's the fsx.cfg, just rename it and read it before you start FSX, as you might want to make some other changes, too.

Come back if you have questions or comments, let us know how you go forward,

All the best.

Thanks for your time, I greatly appreciate it. I will give the new cgf a try

How do I load the new cgf? It keeps going back to my default settings.

I am looking to upgrade my GPU anyway to a 670 so i can run 3 monitors.

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. Just copy the one that fsx is using to "fsx.old" - then put the changed one in its place, and then rename it as "fsx.cfg" - ok? That's all there is to it. Come right back if you still have trouble. We have other ways to get it done!!

All the Best,

Hi, what do i do about me default settings.cfg file? Do i have to change that as well as the settings dont appear to have changed?

FSX only sees the fsx.cfg. Nothing else. Take the changed copy which I posted here for you, delete, rename or move the original fsx.cfg (which you sent to me) then rename it as "fsx.cfg". Put it in the place where the original one was. The pic shows the default Picture" of the fsx.cfg location. "pj" is my username.
