REX FSX Cloud Shaddows

Featured Replies

I remember a couple of years ago REX showing cloud shaddows in some dev screen shots, what ever happened to this? Anyone and ideas?

FSX clouds aren't objects and can't cast shadows. CumulusX adds clouds over thermals, and these are objects and cast shadows normally. Would be nice if all clouds were objects, but i doubt that's feasible.

I remember seeing this. I wondered what became of it, but I'll bet most people would have to eject the warp core from their machines to prevent an auto self-destruct, which is probably why it never came to fruition. It would be great though to have something like that if the performance hit were manageable.

Cloud shadows are one of the last visual elements that FSX does not have that would really put it over the top in terms of immersion and suspension of disbelief. I am always aware of the complete lack of them when playing.

Looks pretty cool. Thanks for the links.

Cloud shadows in CumulusX can be problematic, especially if you're in a shadow at ground level. The shadows have to be perfectly flat, and the ground seldom is. In hilly terrain there are enough problems that CumulusX will turn the shadows off.

Still, it's a great idea, and even with problems it can be very good.
