Terrible night clouds - "Banding"

Featured Replies

Does anyone else have clouds that look like this at night, it's terrible, 32 bit color is selected. Don't know what to call it, looks like bands of different colors. Had it with my Ati card, still have it with GTX670. See pc specs in sidebar, more than adequate to run XPX at very high settings, can't get rid of this banding in the clouds. FPS are great, just not what I see. I have tried the add on clouds out there, no difference. Second shot shows it better.

Do you have Texture Compression turned on in your settings?

with todays update 11, I lost all sound with my Heinz 787 in 32bit mode but didn't notice any weird night cloud graphics, they still look good to me unless I need glasses :Nerd:

Nope, no texture compression. Just did a test in FSX, same thing. I wonder if a IPS monitor would make any difference. This effect has been present in flight simulators for years, lots of it well documented. I want to get rid of it though, perhaps my cheaper monitors are the culprit. Anyone with a high end monitor care to share their cloud experience.

You must need glasses, the screen shots speak for themselves.

It doesn't happen in the middle of the day, or in the dead of night. It's when there is still some lighting effect from the sun and you get that purpleish sky in XPX, or FSX for that matter. At night it's too dark to tell the difference, daytime it's too bright.

Here' my settings. Tried anisotropic filtering at 1, 8, 16 times, made no difference. I do run full screen, got out to use snipping tool.

Could very well be your monitor, a lot of cheaper monitors a 6 bit display and need to dither to get the colours. I understand Grays, like our clouds, can show up very badly as slight gradients are shown with larger gradients as the monitor can perform.

Usually an ips or s-ips panel is an 8 bit with better colours.

Funny, looking at the screen shots now on my laptop I can hardly see the color banding, but it is very obvious on my 3 monitor setup. I don't get it. Read some more about this color banding and even some guys with high end monitors have experienced it. Hate to spend the money on a 30" IPS and still have the issue. It will be tough enough going from 45" to 30", what to do, because it relly looks bad.

Guess I could just not fly at dusk, what!!

Edit: Ha, just checked the specs on these cheap monitors and the "Response Time" is 16ms, I'll bet that has a lot to do with it.

FSX has never looked great at night anyhow.

Neither does Xplane right now, no different than FSX. But thats not what this is about, we don't need to do comparisons, they both look bad. XPX is actually worse with the color banding, there both pretty bad at dusk. As soon as it's dark it's not an issue, it's just before total darkness.

This has been an issue for years with all sims, although I don't remember it being such an issue before LCD monitors, just trying to find the best way out of it, new monitor looks like my only option.

Looking at this 30" IPS, it's 10 bit and 6 ms. Have to like the price and the reviews are great.

edit: No problem with night flying in FSX, looks the same as XPX, just can't stand the color banding. As far as appearence I see no difference between the two, their both dark at night. :P

Actually, forget what I was saying, perhaps...

I just looked at your photos attached and I am looking on what I know to be a good screen. The first thing I thought is that I shouldnt see any banding because I am not looking using your screen.

While you may see it the saved screenshot should look OK on my screen unless there really is banding within the picture. I see it so I conclude it's not your screen but the software putting up that image inthe first place.

You know there are dithering options in the drivers, perhaps they need to be looked at?

I would find the dithering options and make sure it is set to never dither, then see what it looks like and go from there.

I just found this as a monitor test, haven't tried it yet to see. I imagine my banding is going to be bad. Can someone with a higher end monitor try and let me know.

"The Poor Man's Way to tell if you need a better monitor:

* Open Photoshop or GIMP,

* Set the foreground to pure blue (0,0,255),

* and the background to black (0,0,0).

* Make a new image with the size set to native size of your monitor.

* Do a linear gradient from the top left to the bottom right.

If you see banding then you are probably better off investing in a new monitor with a better gamut"

Here's my gradient test using Photoshop CS4, fair bit of banding going on, need a comparison. I chose different colors.

I don't see any adjustments for dithering in the Nvidia driver settings or Nvidia Inspector.

Couple more shots, looking back to a "lighter" sky is ok, just a hint of banding, looking straight ahead to a darker sky (same time and flight) the color banding is terrible. If others aren't seeing this I'm really surprised, or perhaps they just put up with it. I think it's horrible.
