installing, navigating to folders,

Featured Replies

I'm ready for the second tutorial and I see I need to download and install, unzip, etc. SP1c. I'd also like to install some liveries. I've printed PMDGs "How to install liveries" page but I don't know have a clue how to make, folders, sub-folders, putting downloaded items into folders, unzipping.....in other words, I can understand the aircraft procedures,(I'm a licensed pilot) but doing all these computer gyrations in order to make the program work (not the airplane) is above my pay grade. Any help?

Hi

If you use Internet Explorer it will download the files you need to a folder of your choice OR to a default folder. After the download you can open that folder from the Explorer downloader.

For installation of SP1c, just click the exe-file and that´s it. BUT run it as Administrator.

For installation of liveries, download them the same way as explained, Open the PMDG Livery Manager, tell the program where the files are and click on the livery you want to install and it will be properly installed in the right FSX folder.

I would suggest though to make some folders on your computer by using Windows Explorer (NOT Iternet Explorer) and save all your PMDG files in that folder for later use IF you have to reinstall them. I have a folder named FSX-files on my computer and as subfolders there I use the names of the company where I have bought them as PMDG in that folder I have subfolders for different PMDG products as 737NGX an there I also have different folders for the 600-700, 800-900, liveries and other stuff. LIke this

J:\FSX ALL\Bought Addons\PMDG\737 NGX\Liveries

It can be a good idea to create a folder on you harddisk called Temp or Downloads and use them to download whatever you want and move them to other folders after downloading and unzipping. When it comes to unzipping files, just right click on them and Windows will unzip them. When istalling, remember to turn OFF your antivirus programs (if you have any) and choose "Run As Administrator" Also check that the User Account Control (UAC) is DISABLED, if not disable it!! To have UAC enabled very often causes trouble by installing ANY program.

It might NOT answer your question in a proper way but.

1.

Click Windows start, then All Programs

2.

Go to Accessories

3.

Choose Windows Explorer. YHou will now see a layout of your computer.

4.

Click Help in the top menu and view Help

5.

In the search box write Create Folders and you will see a long list about folders and how to manage them.

Just out of curiousity, how did you download and install the basic PMDG737NGX pack? If it was a DVD I can understand but otherwise, do the same thing with the SP and the liveries as you did with the base pack download.

Good luck.

I know you are trying to help and I appreciate it but this stuff is just beyond me. Thanks

I know you are trying to help and I appreciate it but this stuff is just beyond me. Thanks

We've all had to start out some time ! But you're never too old to learn (as an example, my elderly mother learned to use email at age 80 and had never touched a PC in her life until then). Why don't you google the keywords "free online computer basics tutorial" (without the quotation marks) and see what comes up. You'd be surprised at the helpful resources available on the Internet. Good luck.

Cheers,

I've been doing MS flight simulator for a number of years and it seems, no it is becoming more and more an excercise in comprehending the ins and outs of the myriad OS that seem to hit the market every year. I would that these add on simulation programs spend more time getting this various procedures ironed out prior to launching something on the buying public which is by nature incomplete and forcing the consumer to learn to do things of a computer nature rather than a flying nature. I flly computers only because I was priced out of flying the real thing years ago, now its happening on a different plane but happening just the same. When I placed the PMDG program on my computer all the necessary files, folders, etc. went to where they had to go directly from the DVD. But now I find I need downloads to be placed all over the place and I'm spending what little spare time I had for sim flying on trying to get the necessary whatevers where they need to go. I'm saying if the developer could do that on their DVD, why not for liveries and updates? Why the complications?

Your making this all to difficult for yourself as its is an easy as it can be. since all you need is to make a folder on your desktop and place the downloads in there, ie you can make one folder called "pmdg" etc another one you can what ever you like etc So when you download some thing from pmdg all you got to do is direct the download to that folder that you have created.

To make a folder on your desktop all you got to do is right click your mouse button there you will see options select new folder which than your able to rename it to whatever you like.

As the previous posters have suggested there are a number of ways to download and store them to which you have to find which is the easist to use for yourself

OK. Everyone tells me its so easy to do all this folder, zip, cut, paste, blah, blah, blah. And I'm sure it is easy. IF YOU KNOW HOW TO DO IT. I don't . and repeating what I have to do isn't getting the job done. I can read what to do. I can't figure out HOW. Thats been my question all along. How do I 'navigate' to a particular whatever? How do I unzip a file? I know by now I have to do these things, I'm just not hearing how. I fall asleep watching these online tutorials because of poor sound, video or accents which trip me up. And by the way as JJJ asked, the program PMDG 737 NGX was purchased in DVD form, hence making it unnecessary for me to have to do anything except pop in the disk and go. If I had known all this other nonsense was necessary I wouldn't have spent the money. Its also why I stopped my subscription to PC Aviator. There's way too much emphasis on learning the vagaries of computers and computing instead of flying. I know I'm not the only 'old fart former pilot' who is in this category. Sorry for the rant, just frustrated. All I want to do is fly.

Several people here have tried to help you, evidently to no effect. I'm sorry to read about your frustration. But if you still want to persevere, you are going to have to learn some PC basics. You may want it not to be so, but that's not going to change the situation. Perhaps you can enlist the help of a neighbour or someone in your community who can sit down with you at your PC and show you.

Cheers,
Emile Bax.
