Very Strange Error Message

Featured Replies

Shalom and greetings all my pals,'

I was flying from CYRB to BGTL and during this flight, I experienced three freeze episodes called APPHANGB1.

Very strange. The error message APPHANGB1 never happened to me in six years of FSX flying.

I did not make changes to FSX or anything. I just Windows update last night but Windows updates never affect FSX or Sqwkbox or anything.

So far I managed to revive the flight and now is continuing the flight from CYRB to BGTL.

I am using Windows 7 Professional and FSX with SP1 and SP2 as well as latest versions of SQWK BOX 4.0 and FSUIPC.

There is no known 'magic bullet' that will fix this type of crash but I strongly suspect your simconnect connection to Sqwk Box. FSUIPC log in the modules folder will provide you some info but the info is erased when you start a new flight. You might look in any sqwk box log to see if there were any errors in the connection. I had recent problems with my simconnect installation. I just reinstalled FSX. I thought I had simconnect (and the SDK's) properly installed. AS2012 didn't like my connection and froze the flight. I went into the task manager and stopped it from running and, after some moments, FSX continued with the flight. A look at the AS2012 log told me my simconnect was not properly installed (even though PMDG, ProATC-X, and other apps that use simconnect worked perfectly). I think I have it properly configured. I had to copy their simconnect.xml into the folder where the fsx.cfg is located and that evidently resolved the problem. But, installing simconnect, this action was never done during the install process. Perhaps this is your problem too. You are doing the best thing right now by monitoring what's running whenever this freeze (apphang) occurs. Next time turn off squack box and see if the hang happens again. Sometimes uninstalling SP2 and reinstalling it works and the reason for that is the fact SP2 contains an updated version of simconnect and perhaps it configures it properly during the reinstall.

Best regards,

Jim

Jim,

Thanks for kind reply. It is strange that this never happened to me before in six years yet it happened three times in single flight yesterday.

Let's hope it is one time glitch!!!! Lots of people have theories on that and your sqwkbox 4.0 theory is one of those. The other theories are memory fault or virus problem or Vatsim. I have ruled out memory fault and virus problem.

Hi Aharon,

Strange things do happen occasionally with FSX and I think sqwkbox was written for a previous version of FS but upgraded for compatibility with FSX. There are many FS9 addons being used in FSX and there may be compatibility issues. I know simconnect is a major problem but runs great once properly set up. Please let us know if you ever find the culprit. It will help us here in the CTD forum to resolve future issues.

Best regards,

Jim

Of course no problem although I doubt I will be much of help for that. Meanwhile I am going to make another flight tomorrow or this Saturday night and will let you know the results.

I suspect that automatic update of pulse for Norton Anti virus that happened at same time as my flight from CYRB to BGTL might be culprit. So I disabled that automatic pulse update for duration of the flight and restore or re-enable the automatic pulse update while not flying on FSX.

People throughout internet have different but unproven theories about this freeze as well as the error message. One theory is computer virus which I had ruled out, another theory is bad memory problem which I had ruled out, and one theory was blaming on squawkbox 4.0 which I had ruled out because I had been using it for six years on three successive laptops without problem.

Jim,

Just to let you know that I flew from PAKT to CYZF without any problem using FSX SP1 and SP2 as well as Sqwkbox 4.0.

My next flight will be using same softwares as above plus FSCARS and I will let you know the results.

I suspect the culprit was live automatic update for pulse stuff in Norton Anti virus.

Thanks Aharon on the update. I think a lot of problems with FSX is the updating in the background of Anti-virus programs as well as other software installed. Most software makers are including auto-updates with their programs and they seem to want to run at the wrong time (while at FL420 somewhere over the US).

Jim

Yes, Jim

I always disable automatic updates of Norton anti virus preferring to do updates by myself so that my work OR flying on FSX will not be interrupted, slowed down, or affected.

However the automatic pulse updating was new feature in new Norton anti virus that I was not aware of and hence three bizarre freeze episodes called APPHANGB1 in middle of my CYRB to BGTL flight.

Will inform you again when I fly tonight participating in PC PILOT charity event using all softwares mentioned above in previous post PLUS the FSCARS software so that I can rule FSCARS out as culprit if the flight goes smoothly tonight.

The things you are running while using FSX requires simconnect. Like I said earlier, even though it might work for some products correctly, it may not be configured properly for other products and this is exactly what happened whenever I had a APPHANGB1 error (a fsx freeze during the flight).

Best regards,

Jim

Jim,

Just finished the flight from CYVR to KSLC tonight using FSX with SP1 and SP2, Sqwkbox 4.0, and FSCARS. So far no problems. So my theory is pinned on automatic pulse update as culprit.

Thanks for sharing your solution. I hope that was it.

I had my A2A Simulations Spitfire on perfect glide slope into KSFO on a flight from Mariposa-Yosemite yesterday, flaps and wheels down, 110 KIAS, then BOOM! OOM crash.

Event Viewer revealed Norton Liveupdate had chosen that perfect moment to kick in.

Typical.
