Got a question regarding cooling my i7 2700k

At the moment it is OC to 4700 and it does run stable but the heat goes up significantly when I run fsx

The machine came with a corsair liquid cooler but according to the ai suite ii with the fans set to 100% my cpu hits 72-75 deg c at normal speed and if I increase the sim speed to 4 the temp goes up to about 85c

I currently have 8fb ram and a gtx580 the gpu of which, gets no where near as hot.

What would be the best options be to get my cpu running a bit cooler.

would extra ram help ?

I should also say I run alacrity before I start fsx

You have a few options available....

1st check to see what kind of thermal paste you have on the CPU as this can help mitigate things, I prefer Arctic Silver 5 for most applications. Since you are liquid cooled lets stick with that as your OC is pretty high. The best pre-filled liquid cooler I have seen so far is the Corsair H100i, you could try upgrading to that, if you are looking for a bigger difference you could go custom liquid cooling with a refrigerant and for that you would probably like to use an electroceramic paste. Its all on how much you want to dump into this. That being said, if your CPU is getting that hot on liquid cooling you may also want to step back on your OC as you could burn out either or both your motherboard/CPU, try dropping the clock to 4400 and if possible lowering the voltages to match, you should see a pretty good temperature drop from that as well.

Critical question regarding the AI Suite 2...

Are you using the one from the CD that came with your board, or the updated version direct on the ASUS website?

On mine, the one on the CDRom was well out for temps, but soon as I un-installed it and used the newly updated version from the ASUS website, it was accurate.

On my 2 FSX machines, I opted for 2 different things, the Corsair H100 on 1 of them and water cooling for the CPU and GPU on the other...

Typically, the water cooled rig runs around 35deg idle, never going over 45 when running FSX, but my GPU runs at 40deg idle and 55 full whack, so I moved the GPU card to the motherboards lowest PCI slot to keep it away from the CPU and cooling pipes, works just fine.

Another thing to consider is your case too..

I started out with a Corsair 600T case, and that sucked, it's a terrible case for cooling, as it leaks air like a sieve, so you get no air flow moving through the case.. Swapped it for an Antec P280 and bang, 10deg instant lower temps at idle with very strong air flow with all my fans at idle...

The thermal paste on your CPU wont make a huge difference at all, it really is just a matter of a few deg at most, its the cooler itself that performs, and the airflow through your case.

Have you got a picture of your case + fan layout?

What corsair liquid cooler is in there currently, because ONLY the H100 is rated for that sort of overclocking..

My rig with the H100 in is overclocked to 4.8GHz and runs at around 25 to 30deg, idle, 45 max in FSX, but the 7 fans are all at max..

That's all my last 6 months worth of endless messing about to get a stable, performing PC to actually fly with :-)

I used Artic Silver, and then swapped to "Liquid metal" only to find it made zero difference at all, not a single degree lower..
