FSX and FS2004 not getting past splash screen... Help please!

Featured Replies

Hi there all,

I am having some issues with both my FSX and FS2004 for some reason. Both use to run ok on my PC with no issues over a year ago. I haven’t used either until now and have found neither work. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both, no joy. Someone told me to try disabling my antivirus but this did not work. The symptoms are:

FSX – Error window on starting up the program on the splash screen: “fsx.exe – Application Error. The instruction at “0x688f1526” referenced memory at “0xcdcdcdbd”. The memory could not be “read”. Click on OK to reminate the program.”

FS2004 – Start it up, I get the splash screen, and then it just dies. The splash screens closes after a few seconds and that’s it.

I do not know what is causing them both to stop. They both use to work so obviously some common setting has changed but I don’t know what. Attached are the details of my computer from the ‘DxDiag’ thing.

Any help would be much appriacted as I can’t work it out and have given up Googling the answer.

Thanks!

Matt

This topic has been moved from "Nobody Cares" to "Nobody Gives a Crap". This move has been done for a number of pointless possible reasons.

  • Do you really think this message helps at all?
  • This gets the poster excited to have a reply! Only to be dissappointed with whatever this is
  • No one cares about pictures if it's 3 pixels above it's size
  • I guess they need another reason to make it look important

Matt,

I don't know how much you know about FSX' inner workings, but I'd start by trashing the fsx.cfg (find it at C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\{your username}\Microsoft\FSX\ on your XP installation).

It may be that when you uninstalled it the first time, it didn't remove all of its files, and when you re-installed it, it may not have overwritten it and done a "repair" installation. Deleting that might help.

Equally, it may be a corrupt system file and nothing to do with FSX.

Are you starting any addons with FSX? this will often cause startup crashes. Can you post your exe.xml and dll.xml (same place as above) and it will tell if your FSX is starting any addons or not

best

Hi Jake,

Thanks for the advice. I have deleted that cfg file and still no luck I'm afraid. Things I have tried today are:

Ensured my DirectX is up to date (9)

Installed latest graphics card drivers

Installed any updates for Windows that hadn't been up dated

Tried turning off the AGP thing in dxdiag and lowering the sound acceleration to basic

Also in msconfig, turned off all startup items bar Microsoft things

Reinstalled FSX and FS2004

I also noticed that my RailWorks Train Sim 2013 is now also (after it's own error message about something else), doing the "memory can not be read" message. My PC is certainly not slow and other than trying to run these games, I have no performance issues with it. Thing I don't understand is they use to work and as far a I can recall, I haven't changed any major settings. Obviously something has changed but what it is I have no idea. I'm literally out of ideas as to what is causing it. I had a spare few hours the other evening and had the urge to fly... So was gutted when I found out FSX and FS2004 were both dead!

I tried attached the dll.xmp file but it says I don't have permission to upload this! But this is what it says:
