CTD with no dialog at all (locked primary surface)

Featured Replies

Hi,

Ever heard of a CTD with no warning or dialog at all? I was just flying in my local area (as I often do) using the NGX, and then I got a CTD without any warning. GPU usage was normal, VRAM was also normal. I didn't have time to check the RAM usage but I'm guessing it was normal, I have never had an OOM issue on this PC (yet).

The only thing I can think off that was different from my usual flying is that I had the AI traffic (airline) turned up way high. I never use AI traffic, but I wanted to play around with TCAS on different aircraft, so I had it up to 90%. The sim wasn't really lagging or stuttering though, so I don't think it's related...

I only use default FSX traffic (no traffic pack / external AI installed).

In the event viewer, I get this:

Source: Win32k

Event ID: 245

Application fsx.exe locked the primary surface 1 time(s).

Any ideas? I don't really care if it's just a one time thing but I would prefer fixing this now before I start flying longer routes.

Thanks!

You need to download and run AppCrashView - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/app_crash_view.html. It will show you all of your crashes since you last installed Windows. Just copy and paste the complete report here in this post so we can take a look at it. The last one is really the only one you need to post unless they are different and recent.

One person was able to fix your problem by temporarily disabling the Desktop Window Manager Session Manager in Services. If this does not fix the problem, then you will have to completely uninstall/reinstall FSX.

Best regards,

Jim

Hi Jim,

I actually already had that program, so I opened it up but it seems like no entry was made for that crash. I have many past FSX.exe crashes, but the most recent "logged" crash is from several days ago.

I'll wait until I see it again, then I'll post back here.

Thanks for the advice!

Hi Phil,

Did you try disabling the Desktop Windows Session Manager service? If you do a Google search for Application locked the primary surface 1 time(s) you may find a similar situation. This is the first time I have seen this with FSX so I think you have more of a system issue rather than an FSX issue. So that explains why you have no Application (App) Crash.

Best regards,

Jim

Hi Jim,

I didn`t try disabling that service. I would prefer not too because that is what fixes the VSync double buffer issue in windowed mode. I have been using FSX with that service for about a month and a half now.

I might just have played around with too many things. I'll try to see if I can reproduce the crash and then I'll look further into it.

Thanks for the advice though, if I get the crash again I will definitely try disabling that service.

Philippe Hewett
