February 15, 201313 yr I have hundreds upon hundreds of hours in FSX. I have, however, not used it for a long time due to other sims/priorities. Now I'm feeling the urge to reinstall FSX on my new computer (can't wait to get my hands on that Majestic Q400). I'm thinking about buying the "Gold" version from GFWL as I don't really know where my original discs are.. I have a couple of questions for you guys and gals in here: Is the download-version compatible with all the 3rd party software? Does it come with the latest patch/service pack available or do I have to chase those files down myself? Then back to the topic of 3rd party software, what is considered the "golden standard" these days regarding ATC/terrain/weather injectors et. cetera. I have completely lost track of what's "hot and what's not" these days re. FSX. I greatly appreciate your time and all your opinions! Regards, Richard. February 15, 201313 yr Hi/hej Richard! If the download version is the "Gold Edition" it will include Flight Simulator X and Flight Simulator X: Acceleration. And the good part is that you get the Service Pack 2 with Acceleration. So you are good to go, no service pack installation needed thereafter. The download version is compatible with all 3rd party addons/software. The "golden standard" that you are referring is as always, subjective to every user. But to get started I would recommend looking up the following software: Weather: ActiveSky 2012 / OpusFSX / Real Environment Xtreme. I use OpusFSX with textures from REX. Terrain: Ultimate Terrain X / ORBX. Depends on where you going to fly. ORBX has smaller, but more detailed areas than Ultimate Terrain X for example. If you're interested in mesh, check out FSGlobal Ultimate or FSGenesis. For Sweden I recommend SWED2011 and Ultimate Terrain X. ATC: PRO-ATC/X is something worth looking up from what I have read. Don't know how Radar Contact is supported these days. Latest version is 4.3 (what I could find on their website). There have been some rumours about a 5.0 version, maybe someone has more info? I fly exclusively online so I cannot recommend anything, besides flying online B) Other utilities: FSUIPC, A2A - Accu-Feel / Sim Physics X. Probably have a ton more to suggest, but this will have to do for now :good:

Having just installed a fresh copy of FSX gold I wonder what the best move is at this point. Should I do the usual tweaks now, or should I install my mesh/terrain/aircraft first before tweaking...? February 16, 201313 yr Author Best to install your addons first then tweak imo Yeah, you are probably right. However, is 3rd party aircraft really doing much with config files? I can understand if mesh/terrain make changes, but aircraft? Richard 7950x3d | 32Gb 6000mHz RAM | 8Tb NVme | RTX 4090 | MSFS | P3D | XP12
February 17, 201313 yr there nothing wrong tweaking now there no hard and fast rule for this, it all depends on the user on how he feels so if you tweak now and everything runs ok after more addons than great you havnt lost anything. But it a good idea it make a back up copy of your fsx.cfg for future reference to fall back on I7-8700k,Corsair h1101 cooler ,Asus Strix Gaming Intel Z370 S11 motherboard, Corsair 32gb ramDD4,, gtx 1080ti Card, RM850 power supply Peter kelberg
