Hardware for good FSX perf without AI

Recommended Posts

Long time lurker and about to come back to simming.

Read lots of posts about "maxed" out FSX and replies saying how this cannot be done with current hardware. However, I noticed that most of these posts mention that AI and autogen have substantial impact on perfromance.

Given that I do not care at all about AI and autogen, is there, and if so which, hardware that can run FSX smoothly without stuttering during landing/takeoffs?

I would primarily run PMDG737 NGX or likes in complex sceneries (e.g. Aerosoft Frankfurt, etc.). I would also like to have good quality of clouds (i.e. overcast should be overcast).

Another question, is running in higher resolution (e.g. on 30" LED) more demanding on CPU or the lates high performing video cards tackle this?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Aleks

Aleks, absolutely.  I'm on 5 y/o hardware and can tell you w/o autogen, without AI, I can run the NGX just fine out of any terminal.  I don't like that sort of environment, so for me I limit my use of the NGX to lightweight terminals, or island hopping as in Hawaii where I can use FSDT airports and still have great performance (because of the severely limited autogen/AI when you are surrounded by ocean ;o)

Without AI my rig achieves 40+ FPS at all times, even on the ground at KJFK at night in bad weather sitting in the NGX looking at the terminal and Aerosoft Manhattan X in the background.  With AI, (UT2) that number is cut down to 22+.  Used to be some abysmal number like 13, but with a bit of tweaking I've gotten that up to a minimum of 22 now and average is closer to 30.

Thank you for the clear answers.

Seems i3770 with GTX670 is the way to go. Off to setup a config and press that order button.

Wish you all a great day!

I was just wondering when you get the 40 FPS in the ngx, do you get any stutters at all.

Kind Regards Chris

Remember to buy the 'K' version of the CPU for overclocking purposes.

Traffic injection is usually the cause of stuttering on my rig so I'd have to say when traffic is off - no.  I don't run with traffic off though, I have it tuned to my liking now with traffic on.  22+ is certainly less than 40+, but it's smooth enough with flight sim for my liking.

You need to get the 3770K. The K tells you it has an unlocked multiplier and will allow for an easy overclock

Ditto that post. My system specs are almost identical and I'm over 20 FPS in almost all situations and stutter free. My sim looks more fluid at 20 FPS than my previous rig did at 20 as well. Getting around 26 FPS at KJFK with high AI settings in the PMDG NGX, 747, MD11 etc even panning around in VC. Very impressed.
