At vatsim, you can use ATIS, or just call for clearance, once you get ATC clearance, it's quite obvious what rwy is in use.

Nice, non-PC way of saying "NIMBY's.

 

Every paper I wrote in college about airport master planning and compatible land use had to be PC.  I've run out of PC, clearly...haha

 

Reading case studies about Southern California made me really give up being at all nice to people putting houses close to airports.

 

...and then there's my home airport:

The airport was out in farmland up through 2000, and then the suburbs kept on moving out there.  The problem ended up being that the airport is in the county, and the land on the other side of Tolbert Ln is town land.  So, the town zoned it for residential and the county couldn't really stop it in time.  Someone (to include the AOPA from right up Rt 15) did step in and tell them how stupid the move was, however, and they put an end to the development (you can see the roughed in streets - Brown Roan Dr, Oaklawn Dr, and the intersections - where they'd planned on more housing).  Yes, those townhomes on Heartleaf Terrace are just about 900' from the threshold...
